This is as hopeless as it gets. A father and his young son are wandering about, looking for food and a chance at survival. The child alternates between wise beyond his years and whiny. The father, heartbroken over just about everything, knows that the odds of making it aren't getting any better. Did I mention there are roving cannibal bandits? There are. Points off for the ending, and that is all I am going to say.

Creepy, raw, bleak, and well written, this book is bound to make you feel better about even the darkest of your blue skies.

And, ta da! I'm adding a bit that I wrote in the comments section on someone else's review of The Road and unchecking the add to Update Feed box. Because I can and because I care about that kind of thing. So, if you're reading this, I have no idea why. You can stop. Now.

No? Okay....
I would have stayed in that food filled hole in the ground and armed myself to the teeth. And probably died, big as a fatted calf. What got me was that there was no plan! My God, no plan?! Just aimless wandering among scorched trees....

And humans were tracking and watching them for some time. Which is kinda sweet and creepy too. Strength in numbers I guess wasn't the idea. Every bit of me wanted to rise and revolt for the future of the child...a boy that would likely never know the beauty of the seasons, a lazy day of bright sunshine among green grasses, a love that makes you so crazy that you forget to look over your shoulder and you just lie down among the trees and dance together.

Cami Well, I'm happy to read this vicariously through you.

Michael This is one of the two bleakest books I've ever read. Are you interested in the other? :D

But of course! Give me the bleakest book you've got, there is nothing wrong with cultivating a little more thankfulness concerning my lot under the heavens :)

Jen Got it. Thanks!

Jane I'd say that those are two of the bleakest books I've read too. Loved them both.

Jen Have you read Stewart O' Nan's "A Prayer for the Dying?"

It was bleak as well, but I liked it better because of the voice.
