Delirium (Delirium, #1)

Coming down from having just read this, I am less impressed than I previously was, as it usually is with books that I enjoy just a bit when I finish reading them. Then I realize that they weren't actually as good as I had originally thought. This book reminds me too much of Twilight, honestly. It might be the fact that, as later stated, I just don't like romance. But honestly, if romance isn't creepy or overplayed, I don't mind a bit of it in books. It's a part of life, but it's not EVERYTHING. And that's what most romance books (or books that mention it at all, which is why I avoid those as well) do, unfortunately. She was so obsessed with Alex it was kinda weird... I don't know. And there wasn't so much wonder in the descriptions that I could understand why. Love makes people dumb, yeah, but not completely, most of the time. There's at least a little brain there, behind the drooling and stupid. I don't know. I just wish there was a good book that made romance normal and not obsessive. Anyone have any suggestions?

Okay.
There are a couple reasons I shouldn't like this book.
It reminds me almost exactly of Uglies. Now, That's kind of a good thing - I really liked that trilogy (+1), but people normally don't like books that are extremely similar to others. I really don't see the problem in it, most of the time. It's nice to see things from more than one point of view, or a story interpreted in a different way, but I don't like it EXACT. Thankfully, there was enough different in this book that I still found it readable.
Another thing: I hate romance.
I don't hate the thing itself, or even a few books about it, but it's SUCH an overplayed plot point that it's sickening. I can't remember the last time I picked up a book I didn't recognize (I still find myself mainly in the YA section because I haven't made my way through all of the good ones and I'm not long out of teenage-dom) that didn't mention "a boy" or "a girl" that the main character finds attractive - RIGHT ON THE COVER OR THE BACK. It is the most irritating thing to me. All I want is a book that can hold it's own without someone going gaga.
This book is almost completely based on love. Yes, it's about how it's considered a disease in the setting, but still.
I actually really enjoyed this book anyway. At the beginning, it took a little forcing to catch my interest long enough to finish it, and I thought I'd end up giving it 3 stars. Eventually, though, it kept going... and going. Things happening whenever I thought things were calming down, something turning ass backward when I thought I had it perfectly figured out. And I liked it a lot.
It took me on a ride and made me feel things. I found myself so angry at points, so happy at others. I almost thought I was going to fall in love with (view spoiler) myself.
I need to get my hands on the second one, STAT.
