really liked it

Ms Chen's vision of Joan is my vision: a girl who through her abusive childhood and tragedy becomes strong and determined to expel the enemy from her land. By poor chance Joan gets close to the Daulphin at the time when he is uncertain of the role he is expected to play and who takes advantage of Joan's will and power. Joan becomes the victim of politics and her naivety and experinces the rejection without understanding it.
Ms Chen dismisses all religious implifications Joan was given in the later years and centuries and I agree with her. Joan was made saint after five hundred years but in my opinion she was a young woman who knew how to serve France and liberate it. Unfortunately, she became a victim of the policy which she was unable to grasp or accept.
OverDrive, thank you!

Daniel Shindler I have the same view of Joan as you, Beats.

Annette Beata, I think a lot of people might be surprised by this new approach. I guess, that's what retelling is about. But personally, I felt a much stronger connection with The Maid by Kimberly Cutter.

message 3: by Judy (new)

Judy Sounds interesting. Wish my library had an audiobook version along with an ebook. Maybe they will add it.

Thanks, Daniel :)) Ms Chen is rather convincing, and I think her childhood poses a good background for her character shaping.

Thank you, Annette :)) Actually, this is my first book on Joan, just watched a film or two. I may check out the title you mention :)

I was considering audiobook, Judy, but e-book was available so I jumped at the opportunity :) I think you'll enjoy this novel :)

Ron Terrific, Beata. I often found the Joan of Arc story fascinating, although I couldn't say I know the details. Her strength of leadership seems amazing to me. Do you think the novel strays from history, or interpretation is open anyway?

Tina Another good one from Overdrive. Great review!

message 9: by Q (new)

Q Beata - I enjoyed reading your review. It’ll be interesting to read her story separate from religion. I have it on hold at the library and had been curious about it. Years ago I read the play Saint John by George Bernard Shaw. I don’t remember much so I might reread for the comparison. Hope your summer is going well.

I may try it someday. How far are you from Warsaw? We had breakfast yesterday in Warsaw—Missouri, that is! LOL

Meredith (Trying to catch up!) Fabulous review, Beata! I have been curious about this one. I am gald to see it is worth the read!

Judy, actually I'm not that far, around 120 km west of Warsaw :) I would never guess there's Warsaw in Missouri! Hope it's a nice place :)

Thank you, Q :)) It was my first book on Joan, and this interpretation of Joan's personality and strength does sound convincing to me ...

Thanks, Ron! Joan was of humble origin and it is impossible to know too much of her real life. There must be a lot left to interpretation and it may be hard as the sources, the French of the English will differ dramatically. She became a legend soon after her death and I think even the written sources are not to be trusted completely. I agree, she must've been an amazing person!

Bookish Ally I have always thought of Joan of Arc as a deeply tragic figure. Obviously passionate and charismatic and driven- I don’t know that I could bear to read those, although I do love your wonderful review.

Thank you, Ally :)) Tragic and ready to accept what seems too challenging for a female six hundred years ago ..
