Manny In fact, I had experienced true writing skill well before reading Harry Potter. For example, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is very competently written, as are Hamlet, Lolita, Cat's Cradle, Madame Bovary and A Dance to the Music of Time. It would be possible to continue.

Kalliope I have not read Harry Potter so I am not sure I have encountered equivalent true writing skill before.

Manny "What is true writing skill?" asked Pontius Pilate, as he flicked through the draft version of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew.

Anna Chrysostomou I'll be sure to check out those books Manny. I do agree that Hamlet was phenomenal.

Manny Anna, I am glad to hear that you also like Hamlet.

There was another thread where we were comparing Potter and Proust. It's uncanny when you start listing the details. Seven books, both authors claimed rather implausibly to have planned the end before they started writing, both have cult followings and have been filmed, and both contain minutely detailed analyses of how a teenage crush works. But there are noticeable stylistic differences.
