So I'm trying really trying to like and read book.... But it's hard. The first 1/4 Of the book is interesting as you set up the story but with very middling sci-fi. I can overlook that if there was a decent interpersonal story going on but the middle half of the book is an unmitigated bore. Seriously nothing is going on. There is no way a people facing genocide would tolerate the things posited in this story. Humans are hardly forgiving and reasonable in the face of extinction. Seriously stick to halfhearted vampire schtick.
Also I know it's often hard for women to write men but it looks like the author didn't even try. That sounds like an immensely sexist statement but really, really, really men are not women with guy parts. Women are not guys with girl parts. Men don't feel, think or converse like they do in her book. Granted male authors do the same thing, no doubt, but good authors know how to adjust and can step inside the mind of the character regardless of their sex. Meyer writes as if she has never met a man. Men can be sensitive and in touch with their feelings, sure. One or two in a group anyway, not every single one. I had a very hard time believing the reactions and interactions of the men with the main character. I guess I just couldn't believe some of their actions.
Even with all these faults am determined to finish the book and lament the loss of time. It's too bad really she had a great concept and a good opening but just dropped the ball. The book is mostly a high school "does he like me?" Drama overlying a weak sci-fi setup. I'm not sure she has ever read a hard sci-fi novel before because if she had she would realize the amount of work talented writer like Dan Simmons, Vinge, Weber, Buttler, or Stirling go into building a (above all else) a believable world. Sheesh.....
