—De modo que al fin ha llegado —dijo��: la gran batalla de nuestro tiempo, en la que tantas cosas habrán de perecer. Pero al menos ya no es necesario seguir ocultándose.

Buenos, pues aquí estamos, finalizada una de las mayores epopeyas de la literatura. Y me encuentro en el mismo brete que en las reseñas de La Comunidad del Anillo y Las dos Torres, que no sé que contar que no se haya dicho ya. Así que haré un resumen general y luego comentaré las cosas que me han gustado, pero en una pestaña aparte de spoilers. Vamos allá:

Retomamos la historia en el mismo punto que acabó el anterior, y repetimos estilo, primero una parte de la trama toda seguida, después la otra seguida también. Me gusta cómo todo lo que se ha ido plantando sea recogido ahora. El cómo y dónde está cada personaje sirve para que la trama avance y confluya en lo que debe ser, que no es otra cosa que el gran enfrentamiento entre el bien y el mal. Y me gusta mucho el protagonismo que toman ciertos personajes, sobre todo uno, que acaba siendo mi favorito (si es el mismo que el tuyo, choque de puños virtual 🤜🏻)
Aún siendo algo previsible, tiene que desembocar en ese enfrentamiento, que está muy bien contado, y que además no se limita a una escena de acción desenfrenada, sino que tiene otras cosas más pausadas y otra forma de cerrar que me funciona muy bien. En spoilers un poco de desarrollo, que sé que queda algo pobre.

Como lectura ha sido altamente satisfactoria, un primerizo disfrutará mucho del libro, pero con el bagaje que tengo ahora con la obra de Tolkien, sin ser ni mucho menos un experto, se disfruta muchísimo más. Ahora sí, a comentar las cosas chulas:

Era inevitable, tenía que acabar todo bien, sabiendo que esta historia pretende ser una leyenda inglesa "real", y todo el mundo lo sabe ya o lo espera cuando lo lee, pero como cierre es un 10 un 9, tiene la pequeña pega de alargar el final en exceso con El saneamiento de la comarca. Aparte de eso, todo me funciona de lujo. La trama doble que se junta al final también funciona, porque al igual que los personajes de Gondor no sabes lo que está pasando dentro de Mordor, y te genera esa inquietud. Aunque Gandalf aquí nos daba las dos opciones, sabíamos que acababa bien, y en ese caso nos cuenta cómo va a terminar el asunto:

“Y de este asunto conocéis todos bastante como para entender en qué situación estamos, así como Sauron. Si reconquista el Anillo, vuestro valor es vano, y la victoria de él será rápida y definitiva: tan definitiva que nadie puede saber si terminará alguna vez, mientras dure este mundo. Y si el Anillo es destruido, Sauron caerá; y tan baja será su caída que nadie puede saber si volverá a levantarse algún día. Pues habrá perdido la mejor parte de la fuerza que era innata en él en un principio, y todo cuanto fue creado o construido con ese poder se derrumbará, y él quedará mutilado para siempre, convertido en un mero espíritu maligno que se atormenta a sí mismo en las tinieblas, y nunca más volverá a crecer y a tener forma. Y así uno de los grandes males de este mundo habrá desaparecido.��

Los personajes tienen su recorrido, todos ellos, aunque aquí quizá Legolas y Gimli se quedan un poco atrás para ceder protagonismo a Pippin y Merry, cambiando los roles del segundo libro. Pero los verdaderos protagonistas de esta parte de la historia son Gandalf y Aragorn, quien por fin tiene a mano su anhelo de ser el Rey de su pueblo. Aquí algunos de sus títulos, no queda molón ni nada:

¡Hombres de Gondor, escuchad ahora al Senescal del Reino! He aquí que alguien ha venido por fin a reivindicar derechos de realeza. Ved aquí a Aragorn hijo de Arathorn, jefe de los Dúnedain de Arnor, Capitán del Ejército del Oeste, portador de la Estrella del Norte, el que empuña la Espada que fue Forjada de Nuevo, aquél cuyas manos traen la curación, Piedra de Elfo, Elessar de la estirpe de Valandil, hijo de Isildur, hijo de Elendil de Númenor.

Pero quien de verdad destaca son Frodo, por las penurias que padece, y Sam. Si, este era mi favorito, Samsagaz Gamyi, el tío que entra a Mordor armado con unas sartenes (bueno, no solo con sartenes) y su carácter, y no necesita más. Sam es capaz de hacer lo que ninguno hace, que es llegar al monte del Destino cargando a Frodo a cuestas, y sobre todo es capaz de resistir el Anillo Único, ole mi Sam.

El final con toda la escena del campo de Cormallen es precioso, y la vuelta de cada uno a su hogar muy emotiva. Una lástima aquí el lastre de ritmo de El saneamiento. Hace ver cómo han crecido todos ellos, y ver como le dan para el pelo a un grupo de hombre grandes y a Saruman está bien, pero tiene esa bajada de ritmo innegable. Aunque remonta con la escena de los Puertos Grises, y ahí todos lloramos ya sin poder negarlo, aunque sea tan solo un poquitito. Pero haced caso a Gandalf de nuevo, que de todo sabe:

¡Id en paz! No os diré: no lloréis; porque no todas las lágrimas son malas.

Haciendo un resumen a la lectura de las tres obras de manera conjunta, tal como se concibió, me parece una de las obras clásicas de la literatura. Para mí, de lo mejor que se ha escrito nunca y de lo que yo he leído nunca, y no será la última vez que lo lea. Nos despedimos con la voz de Sam, como no podía ser de otra manera:

"Bueno, estoy de vuelta."

“So we come to it in the end, he said: the great battle of our time, in which many things shall pass away. But at least there is no longer need for hiding.

Well, here we are, finished one of the greatest epics of literature. And I find myself in the same problem as in the reviews of The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, I don't know what to say that hasn't already been said. So I'll do a general summary and then I'll comment on the things I liked, but in a separate spoilers tab. Let's go there:

We pick up the story at the same point that the previous one ended, and we repeat style, first one part of the plot all followed, then the other part followed as well. I like how everything that has been planted is now harvested. The how and where each character is serves to advance the plot and converge on what it should be, which is nothing more than the great confrontation between good and evil. And I really like the prominence that certain characters take on, especially one, who ends up being my favorite (if he's the same as yours, virtual fist bump 🤜🏻)
Even being somewhat predictable, it has to lead to that confrontation, which is very well told, and which is also not limited to a wild action scene, but has other more calmed things and another way of closing that works very well for me. In spoilers a bit of development, which I know is somewhat poor.

As a reading it has been highly satisfactory, a beginner will enjoy the book a lot, but with the baggage that I now have with Tolkien's work, without being much less an expert, it is much more enjoyable. Now, to comment on the cool things:

It was inevitable, everything had to end well, knowing that this story pretends to be a "real" English legend, and everyone already knows it or expects it when they read it, but as a closing it is a 10 a 9, has the small drawback of lengthening the ending excessively with The sanitation of the Shire. Other than that, everything works fine for me. The double plot that comes together at the end also works, because like the characters in Gondor you don't know what's going on inside Mordor, and it makes you uneasy. Although Gandalf here gave us both options, we know that it ended well, and in this case he tells us how the matter will end:

“Concerning this thing, my lords, you now all know enough for the understanding of our plight,
and of Sauron's. If he regains it, your valour is vain, and his victory will be swift and complete: so
complete that none can foresee the end of it while this world lasts. If it is destroyed, then he will
fall; and his fall will be so low that none can foresee his arising ever again. For he will lose the best
part of the strength that was native to him in his beginning, and all that was made or begun with
that power will crumble, and he will be maimed for ever, becoming a mere spirit of malice that
gnaws itself in the shadows, but cannot again grow or take shape. And so a great evil of this world
will be removed.��

The characters have their journey, all of them, although here perhaps Legolas and Gimli stay a little behind to give prominence to Pippin and Merry, changing the roles of the second book. But the real protagonists of this part of the story are Gandalf and Aragorn, who finally has at hand his desire to be the King of his people. Here are some of his titles, it's pretty cool:

Men of Gondor hear now the Steward of this Realm! Behold! One has come to claim the kingship again at last. Here is Aragorn son of Arathorn, chieftain of the Dúnedain of Arnor, Captain of the Host of the West, bearer of the Star of the North, wielder of the Sword Reforged, victorious in battle, whose hands bring healing, the Elfstone, Elessar of the line of Valandil, Isildur's son, Elendil's son of Númenor.

But who really stands out are Frodo, because of the hardships he suffers, and Sam. Yeah, this was my favorite, Samwise Gammyi, the guy who walks into Mordor armed with some pans (well, not just pans) and his character, and he doesn't need more. Sam is able to do what no one else does, which is to reach Mount Doom carrying Frodo on his back, and above all he is able to resist the One Ring, bravo for my Sam.

The end with the entire Cormallen field scene is beautiful, and the return of each one to their home is very emotional. A pity here the rhythm ballast with the Sanitation of the Shire. It shows how all of them have grown, and seeing how they give a group of big men and Saruman what they deserve is nice, but it has that undeniable slowdown. Although it comes back with the scene of the Gray Havens, and there we all cry without being able to deny it, even if it's just a little bit. But pay attention to Gandalf again, who knows everything:

Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.

Summarizing the reading of the three works together, as conceived, it seems to me one of the classic works of literature. For me, one of the best that has ever been written and what I have ever read, and it will not be the last time I read it. We say goodbye with Sam's voice, how could it be otherwise:

"Well, I'm back."
