it was amazing
bookshelves: before-2000, historical-fiction

Last night I chanced upon a book-related podcast during which one of the discussants mentioned that he had just started reading this and was impressed with how well written it was and how much he enjoyed it.

And I suddenly remembered how much I had enjoyed it, back in the early 1970’s when I first read (and re-read) it. I suppose it’s a sign of age that the idea of re-reading a trilogy this long does not now appeal to me. Too many books, too little time. But at the time I loved the sense of grounding in American history that flowed from the book.

Highly recommended (even if I’ve lost my copy over the years.).

Correction: I just realized I have a Library of America copy. Not that I have time to read those books, carefully accumulated over the years.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ It says a lot about these books that you remember them fondly all these years later, Barbara. I do understand not wanting to revisit books, especially long ones, when there are so many books wanting to be read for the first time. When I was a lot younger, this didn't bother. I guess the older we get, the less time we know we have and we have to be a little more discriminating.... also why I now allow myself to DNF books, which my 20-year self thought of as a mortal sin!

Exactly! My TBR is always groaning with books that I'm pretty sure I'd enjoy reading if I had the time. Someday, if I ever actually retire (ha!), I may get to some of them!

Libby A hearty recommendation, Barbara. It absolutely is frighteningly difficult to choose which book(s) to read next. Too bad we can't clone ourselves or absorb books by sleeping on them :-)

Wouldn’t that be sweet, Libby! I’d be happy with either one.
