did not like it

Darkest middle grade book I've read. So disappointed. I'm a homeschool mom and thought I did my research on this book. Was sick by the time the boy was being bathed so that he could be sold by a man to another man through the "red" market because he loved to collect children. I thought things couldn't get worse until the end. In my opinion child trafficking with some magic sprinkled on it is not for us.

Carmen The concept of people being spirited away by fantastical people has been in every culture. And it usually happens for very specific reasons. In this case Esteban is tricked into believing that his mother is waiting for him elsewhere. He should have been taught to accept that she id dead and is gone for good. The devil was able to exploit that grief to spirit, traffick, him away. This would be a good discussion to have on the ways and things bad people use in the real world to traffick adults and kids. These conversations are uncomfortable but are necessary.
