Another tired story of the imagined real story behind Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.
I don’t appreciate fictionalized stories about real people who are long gone and can’t tell their side of the story. Nor do I appreciate a “man bad/woman good� theme.
I don’t deny that women were mistreated in the past, I’m just weary of this tired theme which is so prevalent in current books. I’m over it.
Does the world need a “feminist� retelling of The Scarlet Letter? NO

Oh.. you may have changed my mind about reading this one. I don’t want to read another “man bad/woman good� theme either. I feel like that is theme of the year for many BOTM selections this year.

Jan, The Scarlet Letter is one of my favorite books to teach. I stayed away from this book for all of reasons you stated. Thank you for affirming my assumptions! Great review!

Sorry you didn't enjoy this one. I loved it, but books are like jewelry. Some people like a pear shaped diamond and others prefer a princess cut. Love your honesty too! :-)

My high school English teacher was obsessed with Nathaniel Hawthorne and spent an entire semester discussing "The Scarlett Letter". Needless to say, I become physically ill when I see the letter "A" and/or Nathaniel Hawthorne's name.
Fabulous honest review, Jan. Even though I never would have read this book, I enjoyed your review and I am 100% with you about man-bashing tropes. Hope your next book earns 5 stars!
