Another tired story of the imagined real story behind Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.

I don’t appreciate fictionalized stories about real people who are long gone and can’t tell their side of the story. Nor do I appreciate a “man bad/woman good theme.

I don’t deny that women were mistreated in the past, I’m just weary of this tired theme which is so prevalent in current books. I’m over it.

Does the world need a “feminist retelling of The Scarlet Letter? NO

Tina I appreciate your honest thoughts. A good review Jan!

message 2: by Marla (new)

Marla Oh.. you may have changed my mind about reading this one. I don’t want to read another “man bad/woman good theme either. I feel like that is theme of the year for many BOTM selections this year.

*TUDOR^QUEEN* Sorry you didn't enjoy this one. I loved it, but books are like jewelry. Some people like a pear shaped diamond and others prefer a princess cut. Love your honesty too! :-)

Dorie - Cats&Books :) Thanks for reinforcing what I thought this would feel like for me. I"m glad I passed, honest review Jan!

message 14: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Ansbro I share your frustration, Jan. It seems that virtue signalling has taken the place of good storytelling.

It is definitely a theme, not just among BOTM picks, but all of publishing. However, I am an outlier so keep that in mind! Thanks Marla.

message 38: by Kat (new)

Kat I'm with you, Jan. The whole man-bashing thing is a tired trope that I hope authors move on from soon! Great review! 💗

message 39: by Jayne (new)

Jayne My high school English teacher was obsessed with Nathaniel Hawthorne and spent an entire semester discussing "The Scarlett Letter".
Needless to say, I become physically ill when I see the letter "A" and/or Nathaniel Hawthorne's name.
Fabulous honest review, Jan. Even though I never would have read this book, I enjoyed your review and I am 100% with you about man-bashing tropes. Hope your next book earns 5 stars!

Julie I appreciate your thoughts on this one, Jan! Sorry it didn't work out for you. Hope you love your next book! 💖

Sujoya - theoverbookedbibliophile Fair and honest review, Jan!😊 I l usually avoid fictionalized accounts about real people. I'd rather read true accounts.
