This book is as old as I am but remains as pertinent and important a declaration of Civil Rights for all as anything else that has been written since. I don't believe the United States will ever fully confront the racism and resulting damage its white citizens first imposed on kidnapped and enslaved Africans and then perpetuated on generations of their descendants until and including in our present day. But that failure will not be caused by a lack of witness books like Baldwin's provide.
