I don鈥檛 normally read middle grade novels. I came to this book after reading Ann Patchett鈥檚 鈥淭hese Precious Days鈥- a book of essays. One essay within is titled 鈥 Reading Kate DiCamillo鈥. I knew after reading that essay that I had to read this book. I am so glad I did.
Edward Tulane is a stunning china rabbit who thinks very highly of himself. His owner, Abilene, loves him with all her heart. Edward seems oblivious to this, as he only cares for himself. One day while travelling on a ship, Edward is thrown overboard by two mean boys. And so Edward鈥檚 journey begins. Edward鈥檚 journey is fraught with peril but this opens his eyes and his heart. He finally learns what was there in front of his eyes all along- a little girl who loved him so much.
This is a worthwhile read for any adult and would be an especially terrific book to read along with a child.

Suzy I read this early in pandemic lockdown and loved it! So glad it found you. Minnesota Opera has done an opera based on this, just performed recently after a delay due to lockdown. I haven鈥檛 seen it but got great reviews.

Antoinette Actually, Suzy, I have to thank you as I read your review after I finished it and clicked on link to see Kate being interviewed. Such an endearing book. An opera would be very fun to watch.

Suzy I just reread my review and see we both learned of this from Ann Patchett! DiCamillo is a wonderful author. I read this and two other of her books during early lockdown. A balm for the soul during difficult times.

Antoinette I totally agree, Suzy. This book warmed my heart, so I鈥檓 sure her others would as well.

Julie Wonderful review, Antoinette! 馃挅

Antoinette Thanks, Julie.

Cheri Lovely review, Antoinette! I bought a copy of this (or so Amazon say) so it must have been a gift for someone else, but I hope to finally read this one, myself!

Antoinette Thanks, Cheri. It is absolutely delightful. You will definitely appreciate it.

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader I鈥檝e been intending to read this, too, thanks to Anne Patchett. Lovely review, Antoinette. I have read and loved a couple books by this author. Excited to read more.

Antoinette thanks, Jennifer! I would never have picked this one up if not for Ann鈥檚 essay. She definitely inspired me to ignore the fact that this was a children鈥檚 book.

Laysee This sounds like a heartwarming read, Antoinette. Lovely review.

Antoinette Thanks so much, Laysee. It was for sure a heartwarming read.

Diane Barnes I've been meaning to read this too since reading the essay in Patchett's book. May be a great December book for me, since I try to go low key at the end of the year.

Antoinette It would be a perfect low key, December book Diane. It鈥檚 about 200 pages, but lots of illustrations and big print. I spaced it over 2 days, but if you want to sit by a fire with a drink in hand, enjoy it over an afternoon.

Diane Barnes I had another book waiting, so picked up Edward Toulane when I went to the library this morning. It was on the shelf.

Antoinette That鈥檚 how i got my copy as well- meant to be!

Julie G Antoinette,
What I loved the most about this book: I didn't quite understand its trajectory, until the end. I was thinking we were heading into the territory of The Velveteen Rabbit, but the ending actually surprised me. In a good way.

Antoinette Yes, I thought so as well, Julie.

Judith E I鈥檓 currently reading this to my granddaughters but only when we visit them, so it鈥檚 taking some time.

Antoinette How lovely, Judith, to share this book with your granddaughters. Enjoy!
