Dnfable Collection.

A collection of short stories by renowned James Joyce.

Boy this collection sucked! This guy is seriously depressing, and the few times something good was built he killed it with a dismal ending. Unremarkable characters, mundane plots, outstandingly boring storytelling; nearly all of them utterly forgettable, and skimmable. I definitely had worse, but not a lot. This should’ve been a dnf, but stubborn idiot that I am, I didn’t.

Go for the Best, consider the Good, whatever the Meh.

The Good :
★★★☆ “A Painful Case.
★★★☆ "The Dead." [2.5]

The Meh :
★★☆☆ "Araby."
★★☆☆ “The Boarding House.
★★☆☆ "Eveline."
★☆☆☆ “A Mother. [1.5]
★☆☆☆ “Two Gallants. [1.5]
★☆☆☆ “Clay.
★☆☆☆ “A Little Cloud.
★☆☆☆ “After the Race.
★☆☆☆ “An Encounter.
★☆☆☆ “The Sisters.
☆☆☆☆ “Counterparts. [0.5]
☆☆☆☆ “Grace.
☆☆☆☆ “Ivy Day in the Committee Room.

It's public domain, you can find it

-----------------------------------------------
PERSONAL NOTE : Please note my review is not a personal attack on Dublin or Ireland; I'd have felt exactly the same way if this book was written about any city, or even my hometown Buenos Aires, which I also 1-starred.
[1914] [207p] [Collection] [Not Recommendable]
-----------------------------------------------

★★★☆ The Dead. [2.5]
★★☆☆ Araby.
★★☆☆ Eveline.
★☆☆☆ Dubliners.

-----------------------------------------------

Lo Meh :
★★☆☆ “A.
★★☆☆ “La Casa de Huéspedes.
★★☆☆ “EԱ. [1.5]
★☆☆☆ “Una Madre. [1.5]
★☆☆☆ “Dos Galanes. [1.5]
★☆☆☆ “Polvo y Ceniza.
★☆☆☆ “Una Nubecilla.
★☆☆☆ “Después de la Carrera.
★☆☆☆ “Un Encuentro.
★☆☆☆ “Las Hermanas.
☆☆☆☆ “Duplicados. [0.5]
☆☆☆☆ “A Mayor Gracia de Dios.
☆☆☆☆ “Efemérides en el comité.

Es dominio público, lo pueden encontrar

-----------------------------------------------

Juan Nalerio Por ahora vienen correctos.

Loretta Frederico, this your first attempt reading a book by Joyce? 🤔

Federico DN Loretta wrote: "Frederico, this your first attempt reading a book by Joyce? 🤔"

Yup, first time and not looking good. Was it a bad choice? I see you read it, and two more xD

Truthfully, I really didn’t like it at all so I’m not sure why I gave the book three stars. I’m definitely not a great fan of Joyce but many here on ŷ think differently.

Bad choice? Certainly not. You had to start somewhere! 😊

Louis Muñoz I've been meaning to read "Dubliners" for a long time. I'm NOT interested in Joyce's other work - "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" almost finished me my senior year in high school!! - but I saw "The Dead" many years ago, and have always wanted to read that short story and re-watch the film.

Well so far I'm 7/15 and none of the short stories has been over 2 stars, so can't say I recommend it, at all. By the end this will most likely be a 2 or 1 star book. Haven't read "The Dead" yet but I know it's included in the collection and I do hear it's good so, we'll see.

Juan Nalerio Shame on you!

Toni Your review just made me to put this on my tbr list. How ironic.

Federico DN Toni wrote: "Your review just made me to put this on my tbr list. How ironic."

Curiosity is a powerful force lol. I'm outlier here, many people did like it plenty so you never know. All the best Toni!

Opp, it was supposed to be 4 stars, though the gist remains the same. 😅

message 25: by Marcos (new)

Marcos GM I've read some not good reviews, but yours is heavy on the axe. It's a complicated author, I have yet to try some of his books, but I'll keep this in mind if I get to read this

So I'm often told lol. But I'm outlier here so my opinion should not be taken all that seriously. Hope you like it if you give the author a chance :)

message 27: by Marcos (new)

Marcos GM I'm planning a buddy read for Ulysses, I don't know what's gonna come out of that, but looking forward to read something of Joyce (I know, all in, but I can't help myself)

Rachel Hanes Great review Federico! I think I’ll be skipping this book. Happy New Year and Happy Reading to you! 🎊

Karen Oh no! 😅 But now I know a new term: “Dnfable 👍🏽 Hope I’ll never have to use it, but we know how that goes. Love the warning-review, Federico! 🙂 Happy New Year!🥳

Thank you Karen! I sort of invented that term and english is not my native language so have to warn I'm not really sure about its grammar validity lol. Have a Merry New Year 🥳 !

ariadne “Dnfable is such a good term. I enjoy reading one star reviews for some reason. Great review 👍🏼

Saludos! :)

That's great to hear, wasn't really sure it would stand from a grammatical point of view since english is not my native language lol. Thank you Ariadne :D

Gracias Axl!

Rosh (Off GR duty for a fortnight!) Yikes! Starting the year with a DNFable collection! Poor Federico! I Wish you a fab collection next, my friend. Wish you a Happy New Year! 💐

Adina (notifications back, log out, clear cache) I DNF-ed this after constantly falling asleep after reading 1-2 pages.

Thank you Sarah! To tell you the truth the only reason I picked this is because I'm going through my parent's bookcase to see if I can find anything good xD

Sandy Ulysses sucked. Still I wanted to push through and read Dubliners. After ur review, I have serious concerns. Oh boy..

Johara Oh Federico, I too found some of the stories totally boring, but I did enjoy some of them. Maybe because I did it in audiobook, and it was narrated by the charming Chris O'Dowd :P

message 50: by Myriam (new)
