it was ok
bookshelves: fiction, on-my-bookshelf, classics

It must be me. Ernest Hemingway is an esteemed author and The Sun Also Rises is one of his many books that gets very high ratings.

I decided to read this book because I will be hiking the 500 mile Camino de Santiago in Spain. Many pilgrims on the Camino refer to The Sun Also Rises in their memoirs due to the reference of the running of the bulls in Pamplona. I will be spending time in Pamplona and thought this book would give me insight into Spain and Pamplona.

The book seemed to meander and the use of the "n" word was jarring. It wasn't my cup of tea.

I encourage readers to read the many varied reviews about this book.

Vintagebooklvr Have a great time. What an experience.

Sharon Orlopp Thanks Vintagebooklover!!

Carolyn Not just you

Antoinette It’s not just you, Sharon. This book left me unimpressed as well. I am so impressed- when are you walking the El Camino? I am listening to a book at present- a memoir of Andrew McCarthy walking it with his son.

Sharon Orlopp Thanks Carolyn and Antoinette! I just read Walking With Sam and loved it! I’ll be hiking the Camino this summer.

Carolyn Walking with Sam was fun, too. That’s so great you are walking the whole Camino Frances. We have walked a portion of it, and the Portuguese one from Porto, and a bit of the Via Francigena. All were terrific experiences. Planning to do the first 8 days of the Frances in the fall. We really wanted to see the Pyrenees and have never had time to do the entire trail.

Vintagebooklvr I like 1920s books and the angst of that time period but I do understand how you can be unimpressed with it. I'm that way with a lot of the classics. From what I remember I did feel that this ended weakly, like there was really no conclusion. But how boring would it be if everyone liked the same things. There would be nothing to talk about. You aren't the only one by any means with your opinion.

Janice One of my sister-in-laws (loves) is doing that walk as well this year!

Sharon Orlopp I agree that the beauty of books is the wide variety that appeals to many different readers! The Camino has many different routes. I’m hoping that after my Camino this summer that I will return and explore other routes in the future.

Janice What wonderful experiences it would be to try the different routes!
