it was amazing

When I read Octavia Butler’s Patternmaster, I grew impatient with the world building process, and that impatience diminished my pleasure. With Dawn world building is seamlessly intertwined with character development and plot progression. Octavia Butler was clearly in the zone when she wrote Dawn. Dawn has earned a place in my heart next to Octavia Butler’s Kindred and Fledgling novels.

Dawn is the first book in the Xenogenesis series, which includes Dawn, Adulthood Rites, and Imago. When the publisher released the omnibus edition, the three novels were rebranded as the Lilith's Brood series. Named after the main character in Dawn, Lilith Iyapo.

I don't want to reveal anything that happens in this book, so I'll only say that I now consider Dawn to be one of my three favorite Octavia Butler novels along with Kindred and Fledgling.

My daughter gave me the three Lilith's Brood novels for Christmas, so I was able to start Adulthood Rites as soon as I finished Dawn. I'm anxious to get back to it, so I'm going to declare this review finished and get back to reading.

Oh, one last thing before I go. Dawn is going to be made into a TV movie by Amazon Studios. I have no idea when the movie will be made or released, but I'm already cooking the popcorn.

Tim Null Thanks, Carol. I'm grateful you mentioned the Kindred series on Hulu. I loved the first season. I watched all eight episodes on December 13th, then leisurely watched them all again with my wife. She enjoyed them too. I hope the show gets high ratings, so there'll be numerous seasons.

Tim Null Thanks so very much, Lee.

Suhailah Tim, I'm got my fingers crossed for the same thing. Just recently finished reading Kindred for the first time and watching the season 1 premiere on Hulu. Although it differed quite a bit from the book, I enjoyed every minute of it and love the additions they made! I'm so hoping that the views justify more seasons. I would be devastated if it is left like it is. The show has much more to offer! So happy to see you are continuing on yours Octavia Butler reading adventure!!

Tim Null Thanks so much for your comments, Suhailah! Delighted you also love Kindred on Hulu. I read an interview with the show runner and he said Octavia Butler had made numerous notes and had written several drafts of Kindred. He said the changes they made were based on these notes and drafts. He also said they're prepared to do five seasons if ratings are high enough. I would certainly love five seasons of the show!

Suhailah Oh wow, thanks for the extra info. I did not know that! Well, that makes it even better! Yeah I couldn't help but think when reading the book that it could have been a much longer read, and I would have enjoyed every minute of it. I definitely wanted to know more. Staying hopeful the show gets to fulfill that for us!

Beverly Wonderful Review Tim! I loved this series too! And Kindred is one of my favorites of all time!
