Wow! This ghost story/murder mystery gets 5 stars from me for its inventive, double-fake-out ending that is impossible to guess; and for the effective use of artwork to enhance the plot.

This is one book where a physical book is really the best option, as flipping through the creepy pictures drawn by 4-year-old Teddy was half the fun.

Although I liked the book very much, a few points really bothered me:

* Mallory, the main character, seems to ask herself the following question before taking any action: "What is the most dumbass, self-sabotaging thing I could do in this scenario?" and then she does that thing.

* A big part of the plot relies on the idea that someone caring full-time for a 4-year-old could remain ignorant of the child's gender for seven weeks, which seems really unlikely.

* The book employs one of my least favorite "Tropes That Need to Die" - the woman who can't become pregnant and turns into a homicidal maniac.

* The author poses the question, but then doesn't really answer it: if the ghost could draw these elaborate pictures, why not just WRITE the story: My name is Margit Baroth. Caroline killed me and took my daughter. Teddy is a girl. So what if it was in Hungarian? They'd figure it out, just like they did with the useless Ouija board clues. But I guess once you accept the "Anya is a ghost drawing pictures through Teddy" premise, you just go along for the ride.
