Simone St. James first novels were deliciously mysterious. After “The Broken Girls giveaways surged internationally, I hoped Simone would maintain what makes her unique. Alas, this was another crime thriller. ‘Paranormal mysteries should exude life enduring wonderment.

I love that The Sun Down Motel is modern, blended with the recent past most of us know, only 35 years ago. I prefer our authors promoting Canada and our language along with it. We call secondary education, meals, and footwear: university, supper, and runners.

We bought DzԱ’s novels new. I am surprised to be giving two stars. This joyous era was forced with disdain rather than rendered with accuracy; outwardly stating how “outdated things purportedly were. In 2023, my landline gets me on-line and is a phone that works in a power outage. If the internet doesn’t connect, I need a phonebook! Even though this was ‘horror, I have never seen the 1980s lack vibrancy before.

There are jerks who look askance at colour but it was not particular to the 1980s. I grew up with black best friends, neighbours, and teachers. I was upset by the push to make this era sound archaic, when a passerby “looked twice at black & white girls talking in a park. I dropped a third star for spoiling a joyous resolution with a depressing addendum. In fiction, happy endings are possible!

Editing is essential. We heard how wet characters were too often. Simone said the hotel owners were 30 in 1982 and dead in 2017: in their 60s? The year their son was said to be 50? Authors, we love your compelling, compassionate adventures. Please never mind fabricating characters twists, which too often cause you to lose focus on the finer attributes and coherence of your stories. This fresh, original story would have been enough.

There is enough about New York and American states. However, I'm glad she creates 'paranormal mystery'. I especially commend her for modernizing them. Never mind compounding the novels about war or the past. Let our generation encounter ghosts!"

EVERY time rain is mentioned, she goes on about dripping, coats, or hoods more than mystery details. We need the ambiance of FEELINGS more than body gestures ALWAYS. Finally, using a US location doesn't mean chucking our vocabulary and spelling, gee!"

Lorraine I did not think that I would like this so I did not read it. I think you agree with me.

C. (Comment, never msg). Lorraine, we bought this new because Simone is a favourite Canadian authoress (although her locations aren't) and she has written 'paranormal mystery' the way I like it. My reasons for deep dislike this time have little to do with that, so you might enjoy it anyway. It was the most negative depiction of the 1980s I have ever seen, a RECENT period she makes out to be archaic, that everyone else portrays joyously!

Lorraine In 1982 Bill & I were married at my aunt’s home overlooking the Navesink River in Red Bank, NJ. We left the reception in a helicopter. It was a new beginning for me so I doubt I would like this book plus all I have read about it did not draw me in at all.

C. (Comment, never msg). A helicopter! Oh, you grieve by avoiding good memories for awhile. Explains why you could contemplate moving despite needing flatter floors for knees. I have to keep my memories, photos, and everything about loved-ones close. I saw in someone else's review comments that Bill has been to Galapagos, wonderful!

I fondly remember 1982 as the year my longest-lived childhood cat was born, lasting until 2003. Then came McCartney & Spirit, whom I have had all this time. I painfully lament their ascension dates. Their birthdays and all memories, I cherish and hold them as close to me as I can. We make a flowerbed of their resting place. Love, Carolyn.

Lorraine A flowerbed! How beautiful!

C. (Comment, never msg). Anything for our babies. :)

PinkPanthress I understand your rating from your point of view.
To be honest, I would love if she would set the stories in Canada.

Not that I am complaining, but we do not need every single story to be set in the USA. Take Europe, Africa, Asia, etc. we have so many lovely, eerie, serene, scary places on this planet, right?

In general I liked the book, but I can see how there were so many no goes for you.
Maybe her next one, next year, will be more to your liking. Or not... ;)

No matter what, I like your honest review!

C. (Comment, never msg). Hi Pink, suggesting nice books (like I need for Germany) and conversing about books we have read is my favourite reason to write reviews! I would warn anyone who hasn't read the book to not read further but the comment section is for open discussion. It is my pleasure to get into detail! First, we agree wholeheartedly that our world is full of countries we need to see more in literature. I trade Manitoba books with a friend in New Zealand.

I can't think of any nice stories about Germany. Please leave a note anywhere (except messaging or recommend button), if you know translated books that are not about war. Germany must be a beautiful place and is a part of my heritage! Modern instead (whenever it was published) instead of fake historical fiction is even better.

Simone using words like "college" when we say "university" irked me enough to suggest promoting Canada but that did not lead to 2 stars.

Turning the potential of 'paranormal mystery' into a 'thriller' was disappointing. Inaccuracy of people's ages and our continued need for solid old technology was bad. Finally, we have the joy of finding out that Viv is okay. She fought in self-defense and can be happy now. Did she need to offer to go to jail and have cancer? What a downer!

Diane Wallace Honest opinion, Carolyn!

C. (Comment, never msg). I can't spoil particular disappointments but this novel would have done better to ditch extra drama and twists and end a few chapters earlier.
