I read this book in a marathon session, feeling irked when life forced me to climb out of the tale for awhile.
I liked the detail, I liked feeling like I was getting a look into life in the Afghanistan of the past, I liked the way the book focused on relationships and the small (or not so small) moments that make or break them. By the time the real melodrama hits in the end, I was too far in to take a good look around.
Please see my friend Naeem's review for some well-deserved criticism. I feel a bit sheepish about keeping my five star rating, but it was my initial reaction. I'm willing to be honest about that.

Your review is right on. I didn't pick up on that; I guess I was too wrapped up in the drama by that point. I liked the book for the reasons you cited, and because I felt it showed me a glimpse of a place I know very little about. I'm hungry for those glimpses and grateful when I find them. I should remember to still view them critically.
