it was amazing
bookshelves: favorites, american-literature

I loved loved this book. There is a quiet intensity in the book that completely overtook me as I was reading this book. This book takes place in small town USA- Holt, Colorado. We meet and follow some of the residents and what a joy it was to follow these people, all in one way or another coping with loss, with loneliness, with everyday life. The writing is so clean, crisp and resonant of the people. I, in particular loved the McPheron brothers, 2 elderly bachelors who have been on their own forever, who now have let a 17 yr old pregnant girl move in with them. Such a compelling novel!!!

Cecily Clean and crisp - yes. And I share your love of the McPheron brothers - and by extension, of Haruf.

Thanks so much Cecily. Haruf holds a special place in my heart!

Kara Hansen Is this a new review, Antoinette?

Antoinette Kara, No it’s not a new review. Not sure why it popped up again. I read this in 2014! But I have the urge to reread it now!

Susan's Reviews I loved this one as well!!! Excellent review!

Antoinette Such a special book, Susan. Glad you loved it as well.

Lisa It is indeed a special book. I just met this cast of characters and am captivated. "Quiet intensity" is a perfect descriptor.
