LOVED. IT. I liked, first of all, how charming it was--I normally don't appreciate a lot of footnotes, but these were so interesting and fun, and whimsical that I didn't mind the interruption. I liked, also, the length--which may seem like a weird thing to say, but I like existing in the world created and with the characters for a while (which is why I like series). 200-300 page novel doesn't give me enough of a sense of time passing and place and intimacy with the characters. One of the things that I like most in a book is atmosphere, and this had it in spades--along with enough time to really appreciate it. I also liked the contrast in the book of the fun and whimsy with the sense of real danger and a bit of darkness thrown in. There was certainly some menace to the gentleman with the thistledown hair and Faerie in general--but it was never at the expense of the sense of fun of the book (and vice versa). Anyway, I look forward, anxiously, to reading Clarke's short stories and to what she does next.
