Modern Library 100 Best Novels (02/100)
I love you, Jake Gyllenhaal (I mean, your audiobook version of The Great Gatsby—listening to it was such a marvelous experience).
What can I say regarding this book without being repetitive? Perhaps that I was expecting a dense, 'boring' read, one of those books that people have to read during their school years in English-speaking countries—or is it only in The States?—and that everyone hates after giving it a go. I have no idea why I thought this beforehand, especially when my two required readings in high schoolJungle Tales by Horacio Quiroga and The Plain in Flames by Juan Rulfo—were quite enjoyable; as for The Great Gatsby, it reads easily, and the story, apart from being very well written, is riveting and captivating—you literally need to keep reading until the end just to know what will happen with the characters and their conflicts. Topics such as relationships—both love and friendship—power, money, social class, along with people's dreams and fears are only one part of this incredible masterpiece.
Also, I would highly recommend the audiobook narrated by Jake Gyllenhaal—just in case it wasn't clear at the beginning of my review that I loved it—since he really brings the book to life; his voice as well as his pace are also the right ones particularly for this novel, which means that the narration should be more than satisfactory.
My rating on a scale of 1 to 5:
Quality of writing [5/5]
Pace [5/5]
Plot development [4.5/5]
Characters [5/5]
Enjoyability [4.5/5]
Insightfulness [4.5/5]
Easy of reading [4.5/5]
Photos/Illustrations [N/A]
Total [33/7] = 4.71
