princess.

WELP. I'm sad to say that Cress still drove me mad for the first 75% of this book, but once again, she inexplicably improved in the end. This is one series that benefits greatly from multiple POVs.

Onward and upwards.

I¡¯ve been very up front about my love of fairy tales, and RAPUNZEL is one of the only Grimms¡¯ Fairy Tales that has a somewhat happy ending (even if it is a little bit °ù¾±²õ±ç³Ü¨¦).

In the original version, the prince finds Rapunzel after hearing her sing. He comes back day after day to listen to her, and, eventually, he sees the Witch and learns how to gain "entrance to her tower."

And he does. Frequently.

*suggestively waggles eyebrows*

Which brings us to how Witch discovers that she is no longer Rapunzel¡¯s only visiter--Rapunzel is found to be inthefamilyway (ifyouknowwhatimean).

Anyway, Witch is so furious at Rapunzel¡¯s ¡°betrayal¡± that she cuts her hair and casts her out into the wilderness. Then she waits . . . *cue ominous music* . . . for Prince to show up, and when he does, she flings him from the top of the tower, and briers scratch his eyes, BLINDING him, when he lands.

Stuff happens and they live HEA.

CRESS by Marissa Meyer is the RAPUNZEL--based third installment of the LUNAR CHRONICLES, and while I had no urges to throw or otherwise damage books in this reading, I did have to stifle an urge to throw or otherwise damage Cress (the MC, not the book).

I¡¯ll say up front--until around the 75% mark, Cress is downright A-N-N-O-Y-I-N-G. Fortunately, having multiple other POVs kept this from being overwhelming.

I¡¯ve already stated that RAPUNZEL is my all-time favorite fairy tale (and has been since I was like five), so mayhap my expectations were always going to be too high. All I can say is I was dancing with glee that Meyer got the blinding (of the ¡°prince¡±) part right, while simultaneously pulling out giant handfuls of hair every time Cress did a not-at-all-endearing imitation of a certain Disney character.

BUT Cinder and Kai were spot-on, and Thorne was as incorrigible as ever, so it balanced out (Scarlet and Wolf weren¡¯t a huge part of the storyline this go-round). AND once I hit the 75% mark, Cress stopped being silly and ridiculous and started being . . . something else. I don¡¯t know what exactly, but I didn¡¯t hate her anymore, and that¡¯s all that matters.

Or almost all that matters.

I figured out a while back that my rating system is mostly based on THE FEELS. The books that are decent, but don¡¯t really evoke much emotion get 2 to 3.5 stars. The books that have me doing various things of a superlative nature get everything else.

Problem is, sometimes a book is pretty MEH until the very end, then BAM--THE FEELS. Suddenly, I forget all of the MEH from the front 90% of the book.

I¡¯ve been working on that.

Which is why CRESS gets 4 stars and not 5. THE FEELS actually kicked in around the same time I stopped wanting to wallop Cress, and she was the minority (no other characters drove me batty). BUT she was the main character, so I didn¡¯t feel I could in good conscience be totally swayed by THE FEELS.

I felt that Meyer wrapped up CRESS beautifully. Am I happy to be waiting another twelve months to read the conclusion? No. Of course not, but I¡¯m still ridiculously excited to see what happens next. Especially with a nutso Lunar princess waiting in the wings. Winter is clearly C-R-A-Z-Y.

Brandi Great review, as always, Jessica! :)

Mitticus There is an early version of Rapunzel -- Petrosinella (Parsley)-- who is more active in her rescue. She is given to an ogress by her parents, and she is under a spell, but with the er complications of the prince they had to scape and she knows how to do it! Is really different to the soft Disney's version. I use to love that tale b/c I have a 'beautymark' like her.

I'll have to look for that version. And how funny is it that in both version's she's named after a leafy-green? And the Rapunzel in the version I read might not have been as active as your version's, but when the prince found her, she had managed to take care of herself and their children for several years, so she wasn't completely helpless ;)

Derrolyn Anderson Great review, and I love the dating stories!
I too kissed my fair share of toads and decided to become a "born again virgin" just before I met my husband.
My resolve didn't last long, as he broke my vow on the first date, but it's okay - We've been happily married 25 years :)

Jessica ? ? Silverbow ? ? 25 years! Hey, sometimes you just know, right? And thanks--sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself ;)

EEK! I just realized that I commented on the wrong review (meant for "the Hollows"), although I liked this one too! LOL
I guess they were close together in my feed :p

Jessica ? ? Silverbow ? ? I knew what you meant ;)

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* Hahahhahaha.... have you read Flinn's Towering.... if you haven't, I would advise not to.... I hated it!

Also... Rapunzel for zee win! I've always loved the traditional story too.

Jessica ? ? Silverbow ? ? No, I haven't. I tried to read Beastly and it was so . . . teen-angsty that I haven't even paid attention to anything else she's done.

RIGHT? Rapunzel, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, and Rumpelstiltskin--Brothers Grimm-style--are my favorites. And while I LOVED Tangled, Disney gets leeway that no one else gets. #sorrynotsorry

Karlyflower *The Vampire Ninja, Luminescent Monster & Wendigo Nerd Goddess of Canada (according to The Hulk)* And see I didn't mind Beastly... BUT Towering, ugh! (My review is actually full of "Tangled" gifs - because you're so right Disney gets away with things no one else can)

I actually finished a 101 Grimm fairy tales book in December.... love, love, love!! It's the darkness that appeals to me, how unjust the punishments usually are compared to the "crimes"... I am evil! But Rapunzel... gah LOVE.

Rynae You give me hope. Cress is getting on my last nerve with her swooning and daydreaming. I'm glad to know it gets better! Maybe this is just the authors way of describing how a young girl might act after being trapped in a satellite for 10 years. I miss Scarlet and Wolf quite a bit...I felt that they were much stronger characters.

AlisonClaire Holy crapola, great review and all, but OMG your second to last paragraph IS my life! You have described my rating system to a T. Nothing drives me more crazy than books that I don't love, don't hate, but am just sort of MEH about with no particular reason why. So I probably give way more 3*s than I should! Anyway, love your last paragraph.

Jessica ? ? Silverbow ? ? Rynae wrote: "You give me hope. Cress is getting on my last nerve with her swooning and daydreaming. I'm glad to know it gets better! Maybe this is just the authors way of describing how a young girl might act a..."

OMG, me, TOO. As much as I liked CINDER, SCARLET blew it away, and I was feeling a serious lack of Wolf and Scarlet. BUT. With Scarlet's current situation, I'm hopeful that won't be the case in WINTER.

And it may be unforgiving of me, but after learning that Mayer got her start in writing fanfic, I really feel like that's what she was doing here: writing TANGLED fanfic.

Thank you! It's always nice to meet a kindred spirit ;)

Nafeeza Your review is spot on Jessica.
