I finally figured out what it is about Mariana Zapata's books that I like so much.
For one, her female characters are impossibly relatable, independent and strong. I often read romance books where authors create amazing male characters only to ruin their female counterpart by making them weak and immature, losing points in favor of their love interest, but I'm glad to say neither All Rhodes Lead Here nor this book suffer from this literary disease.
Another thing I've noticed is that all her male characters are different, even when they share similar traits. Case in point, Rhodes and Aiden are both the grumpy, solitary type, but you can tell they both have distinct personalities to go with it.
Third, there's such little drama in these books you can't help but consider them comfort reads. There's conflict, mind it, but it's of the realistic kind and it's never there to create artifiial drama.
Last but not last, thanks to MZ, I've learnt to appreciate slow burns for real.
Let me elaborate; you know when you're reading a romance book and there's the spark, there's the pining, the flirting, the moment of realization -plus eventual love confession, and then they start living their happy ever after? I sometimes, more often than not, lose interest in the romance after that point; the whole we're great, we're in love, we fuck like bunnies, oh no what is that? boom, third act breakup! shebang, I mean. Yeah, that doesn't always do it for me, and that's why I love Mariana Zapata's books. The author puts all her effort in the before, making it impossible for the romance to go stale and boring and predictable.
I'd like to personally thank her for making me love things in my romance books I've never considered appealing before.
The Wall of Winniped and Me is a lovely read, ideal for those who love sport romance and the slowest burns to ever slow burnt.
I was hooked right from the very first line, and not just because MZ's writing is good. This book is FUNNY and so so so so entertaining.
I love watching Aiden and Vanessa get closer and become friends. Their relationship was very believable and their individual backstory made this book even more emotional than it already was.
Team Graves forever!
I'll never thank Leni enough for introducing me to this world I never knew I needed to be in.
And even though nobody will ever top Rhodes, I'm gonna make it a mission to read every single Mariana Zapata book I come across, from now on.
