it was amazing

In late 1950s Congo, an American missionary arrives with his family intent on bringing enlightenment to the savages. The experiences of the family are told by the preacher鈥檚 wife, Orleanna, and their four daughters, the vain Rachel, twins Leah, who is devoted to her father, and Adah, damaged at birth but more aware than anyone realizes, and the baby, Ruth Ann. The events take place during a period when Congo was eager to cast off its colonial chains and we see some details of events of the time.

description
Barbara Kingsolver - from the Guardian

This is a tale not merely about a missionary family in an alien land, but about learning to see what is in plain sight. It is about opening the mind and the heart. We learn about the local culture, good and bad, as well as about the mores of the missionaries.

The father is presented as a mindless faith-robot, determined to convert the heathen while being completely clueless about and uninterested in learning how to actually communicate with them. I would have preferred it had this character been given some more dimension, instead of serving as a stand-in for the arrogance of western cultural imperialism. His family is given a better shake. Through Orleanna鈥檚 and the girls eyes we see not only their private struggles and coming of age, but gain insight into and information about the strange world into which they have been thrust. Kingsolver reminds us of the time period with small portraits of local involvement in the independence movement.

I expect that there will be those who reject the novel because it takes an anti-imperialist and anti-missionary perspective, ignoring the aspects of the tale that are critical of local practices as well. But I did not react to this book as a political screed. There is great craft at work here. Kingsolver offers poetic descriptions that I found extremely beautiful, rich and moving. Her main characters were well-realized and accessible, and she succeeded nicely in giving each a very individual voice. The path along which she moves her characters made sense to me and only rarely did I have a tough time accepting her authorial choices.

Overall, this is a terrific book, well-crafted, informative and satisfying.

For any interested in learning about the history of the Congo, particularly as it pertains to Belgium鈥檚 role, there is no better read than Adam Hochschild 鈥榮 King Leopold鈥檚 Ghost, an outstanding telling of that story.

Lynne King You know Will there is something thrilling and yet chilling about this book and I'd like to read it now.

I wouldn't have dreamed of looking at a book like this several years ago but I guess my sleepy mind is slowly but surely waking up to everything. I always was a late developer!

Excellent review too.

Will Byrnes I always was a late developer!

Me too!

Monica I would have preferred it if this character had been given some more dimension, instead of serving as a stand-in for the arrogance of western cultural imperialism.

Finished this and promptly put it on my all time favorites pile. I disagree with the notion of Nathan as a stand in for Western arrogance. I think he was a stand in for mindless religious patriarchy. And they did humanize him a bit later in the book when they revealed that he basically had PSTD. What was appauling to me wasn't him so much as the treatment of his family as a result of that patriarchy. All the missionaries and the establishment basically knew hew was emotionally unhinged but really did nothing for the wife and children in spite of Nathan's intransigence. They were left to mind the head of the household. Anyways, my 2 cents. Great review.

Will Byrnes Thanks, Monica. Interesting point.

LOL :D

But, that was one bad-ass review, Will. It is clear that you thought of the material from multiple perspectives - that of the reader, author, the characters in the novel, imagined their viewpoints, and, articulated your take on each of them superbly.

Five stars for this thoughtful review :-)

Ted Always nice to see a review that vindicates our own liking of a book, WIll. (Gulp, that sounds sort of closed-minded - but we're just talking fiction. I did love the book, it was my first by Kingsolver.)

Cecily Great review, Will.

I especially love your angle of learning to see what is in plain sight and to open one's heart and mind. There are big issues here, but as you say, there is craft, rather than political screed.

Cathal Kenneally I haven鈥檛 read it yet but I got it purely on the strength of The Lacuna. Absolutely brilliant book, so I鈥檓 looking forward to reading this

Brooklyn i loved this book and have read it twice. it got me hooked on kingsolver. its so well written and intriguing and tragic blend of the historical the political and the personal. One of my all time favs. I liked Flight Behavior a lot, The Lacuna less so though there were brilliants spots, Animal Dreams.

Owen Banner Any time I read a book, I come to your page to see what you've thought about it. I agree on every point. I wish the father's story had developed a little differently, but I do appreciate the cautionary tale of the family's story because of certain attitudes (so hard to do this without spoilers). My favorite POV was always Ada's.
