The Secret River

possibly my favorite book this year
This book was everything. It was the first book I’ve ever read about the formation of Australia. It was like reading an Australian version of the TV show 1883. “Untamed wilderness, forced settlements, colonialism, white Savior superiority complex, decimation of the Indigenous, moral dilemmas overpowered by self-preservation and greed, and the choices made at those decisive points in life that make or break fate. She tells a very rich story without judging anyone, even though it’s only told from Thornhill’s singular and ignorant perspective. This is a story about the Aborigines as much as it is about the protagonist.
