We discussed this one in my library book group years ago, and I am now bringing this review to ŷ.

This is truly a classic. Probably for its memorable time and era, and for the fact that it seemed to be Harper Lee's only novel for the longest time. (We know differently now.)

Back to the book.

I'd like to think of this classic in words.

Compassionate.

Dramatic.

Deeply moving.

Lee takes readers to the roots of human behavior - back to a time of innocence.

Kindness. Cruelty. Hatred. Humor. Pathos.

Maybe in some ways it was a simple love story about life.

Any way you look at it, it truly is a masterpiece that will always be returned to time and time again.

Dennis I remember reading a long story on Harper Lee in The New Yorker years ago and in it, there was a report that she had another book ready, not related to "Mockingbird", that she claimed was stolen from her apartment in a burglary. A fascinating but frustrating woman; I often wonder what might have happened if she'd written and published more but she will probably be one of those writers who goes down in history, along with the likes of Margaret Mitchell, Ralph Ellison and Juan Rulfo, known for THE great book.

You bring out some good points, Dennis. I think it is sad that her relatives felt it even necessary to publish her second book, Go Set a Watchman, probably allowing them to make something off of her estate. It appears obvious that it wasn't really reviewed very well by the editor before it was released. She did quite well as the lone known author of the one great book prior to this one! :) If you haven't had a chance yet, I recommend Furious Hours, Murder, Fraud and the Last Trial of Harper Lee by Casey Cep.

Nadia A beautiful review of a wonderful book, thank you Karen and I hope you are well. 😊🏝️🍹🦋

Thank you Nadia.

Dennis In a sense, this reminds me of Robert Ludlum, long dead but the estate keeps generating income by farming out the name. (By the way, I enjoyed his early novels - written by him - but it all became formulaic and when writers were contracted, they knew what they had to do! Likewise, the continuation of "Gone with the Wind".

Sad, isn't it?

Dennis Business is business, and some writing is more commercial than others. There are a plethora of testerone-filled action novels for men and shelves full of shirtless, muscular men gracing romantic, racy novels for women. When you can't reach the brain, go for the hormones. Same idea, if you can't think of something new, write a sequel. Alexandra Ripley may have written schlock before she died (my opinion) but at least she was able to cash in with "Scarlett"

I am so sorry I missed your note Dennis. I agree with what you share. It is sad when the writing becomes commercial or even formulaic. As reviewers, that is where we come in. We tell it like it is! :)

Wendy Walker Great review, Karen! I feel the same way you do about the book. I would have given it five stars. I strongly think this is one of the better books I have read.

Thank you so much Wendy. I think there was something holding me back from the 5 stars. And yes I called it a masterpiece. But, I would have to go back and re-visit it again to find out what it was that led me to 4 stars. Thank you again. 🙂

Karina I LOVE this timeless piece of artwork. Banning this would be an injustice. I made my freshman in HS son read this and he actually enjoyed it. He didn’t talk about it but he wasn’t rolling his eyes so I knew lol. Teens! And all of them should read this!

giso0 Wonderful review for a great book. Couldn't agree more!

Marijke Carson A timeless novel that is truly great because it shines a light straight at us and our human-ness. These are often the best books. Good, courageous, upright standing against human shortcomings. And the invitation to see how much of each is present in you, the reader.

Darla One of my all-time favorites. Wonderful review, Karen!

Thank you Karina. Yes, so much to learn from this! Glad your son didn't roll his eyes! 🙂
