This is a book I read a while ago and I'm now bringing my review to ŷ.
Although the target audience is middle schoolers, this is a book that can be read by any age group.
And, if you have only relied on watching the movie - stop, turn around and consider picking up this book. It is inspiring. It is refreshing. We can learn something from it.
August doesn't look like anybody else. He has a rare genetic disorder. And so, his mother protected him by home schooling him. But, he wants to go to school.
The problem is that August lives in a brutal world. So surely, middle school is the last place he could ever hope to be or find normal, right?
This book gives a very realistic look at the frankly cruel reality that is a typically hushed topic in children's books. Wonder is about something that we don't really like to talk openly about because it is so rare and so very sad.
And that is simply...how we react to, and/or respond to people who don't look like us.
What happens when we create this hurtful rejection because this person doesn't fit the mold of what we expect?
The goodness of August is that despite what he lives with, he is a boy who can't be hushed into silence.
He chooses not to be invisible. He wants people to see more than what is on the outside.
We can learn a lot from August. Because in truth - we all are more than what we present on the outside.
This book is bold and funny and engaging.
We as a human race can do better. Wonder helps to teach us to do just that.

Thank you Maureen. It was heart-wrenching, and heart-warming! :) Your heart emoji says it all!

Thank you Sujoya. I couldn't agree more - it is such a beautiful story. :)

I so agree. And thank you! I love when a book moves us in this way.

Thank you Adina. I still refresh with a book so that it helps me remember! 🙂

Thank you on both, Jan. I appreciate the recommendation. 🙂
