it was ok

Dear authors, please stop talking about Tiktok, AO3, Riverdale, Cole Sprouse and Timothée Chalamet in your books. Thank you.

Update:
Just found out this book is the story of Anna Cramling and Magnus Carlsen but with romance? Idk how I feel

message 19: by Sofie (new) - added it

Sofie Vahle no cuz this is an ICK of mine. i can’t do it. as soon as i see some kind of gen z reference (or whatever) i will put the book down

message 20: by BrookieCookie (new)

BrookieCookie Ik I hate when authors do that. I read The First to Die at the End and it was really good but it kept talking about slang and trendy things in the 2010's.

message 21: by Isis (last edited May 21, 2023 11:11AM) (new) - added it

Isis Anna Cramling AND Magnus Carlsen?! You've gotta be joking me. That definitely makes me see the book differently now.

message 22: by Alex (new) - rated it 3 stars

Alex wait wait what, anna and magnus?? pls no😳😂

Jayda 🍉 Anna and Magnus??? Pls tell me you’re joking

message 25: by FroggoMuppet (new) - added it

FroggoMuppet Same. They seem to think all Gen Z people like TikTok, Insta/social media, pop stars and Netflix. We don’t. I actually despise all these things and many people my age do. A lot of us youngin’s are tired of this shallow, vulgar pop culture and political correctness and the last thing any of us more intellectual types wants to see is references to these brain-deadening big corpo apps. We aren’t like millennials or Gen X when it comes to trends - at least not all of us. No matter how good this book may be seeing references to this dumb stuff gives me a huge ick and makes me put it down 😂 if older authors want to make these stories relatable to Gen Z, you honestly don’t need ANY of those ref at all. It’s a certain group of people who are addicted to social media and celebrities anyways. Most of us are actually engaged in real life and realise there’s no point worrying about these people who don’t even know you exist 💀. So my tip, is to appeal to a younger audience, you don’t need these mortifying ‘Gen z pop culture references. It actually turns most readers (ironically Gen Z) off the book. Hope this helps!

Jeannine I’m not following the idea that the character in this book are based on Anna and Magnus? The FMC uses competitive chess to help her impoverished family. She’s not an influencer. They’re American teenagers when the book opens.

jordan (*^ー^)ノ♪ oh I'm scared 💀

tanveer ⋆。✧ anna and magnus?? 😭

yes I got the physical arc

he is a tiktok star in the book

message 31: by Esma (new)

Esma Ohoh hab gerade das Buch gesehen und gedacht es klingt gut und jetzt sehe ich Madita hat es mit 2 ⭐️ bewertet.help

message 32: by Kara (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kara Hansen I think it’s just that even if you arent into Tiktok, its very relevant in this day and age. So even if the characters arent into it, Tiktok is still going to exist in the world and have influence/share news. It’s just how it is.

message 33: by Mary (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mary Just curious as I’m not familiar with Anna Cramlimg or Magnus Carlson and your claim this book is about them? In the book he’s not a “tiktok star since he doesn’t use socials at all. If he’s a star in the sense that ppl talk about him? Bc the running joke in the book is he doesn’t use social media and it’s managed by someone else.

emsie o Then maybe this isn’t the book for you personally I like timothee chalamet and ao3 so this review was at least helpful in someway

Flavia 🌙 It’s not a fantasy book. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a CONTEMPORARY book having modern things in it including social media.

lebanese letters idk it doesnt bother me bc of how she incorporates it into the book

message 37: by Lilliane (new)

Lilliane I never liked a thing by ali hazelwood idk but it's something about the way she writes like dude pls stop am cringing already 😬

message 38: by í (new) - rated it 4 stars

í Mal talks about that once in separate instances mostly because of her teen sisters. I didn't even remember until I read this, people love to exaggerate things.

Dayna Yeah...definitely stop writing about THINGS THAT EXIST IN THE WORLD, authors.

message 40: by kat (new) - rated it 4 stars

kat Magnus Carlsen is Adam Carlsen’s second cousin 😌😂

✿ Axa ✿ Thank you for saying this😩👌🏻

message 42: by mak (new) - rated it 4 stars

mak I think that’s why most places list it as YA. Personally, it reminds me of reading unpublished books online and brought me back to middle and high school. They’re trying to relate to. generation they didn’t grow up in. It comes off a wee bit awkward, even having experienced it and “grown out of it. I haven’t finished it yet, but I do get where you’re coming from. I haven’t read YA in a while, but I have high hopes bc I’ve loved all her other books.

message 43: by Lea (new) - added it

Lea Wellington That's the reason why I stopped reading it, but I'm also curious

Carley I mean, AO3 is not Gen Z specific, lmao. It's not like she was talking about reading on Wattpad. Also, Ali Hazelwood starting her writing journey posting on Ao3, so again it's not like she's writing about things she doesn't know about. Also, if she's writing a YA novel with modern YA characters, there are going to be pop culture references that are relevant to those characters lives. Personally, I thought Mallory was a bit disconnected from social media and read a little "older" than her demographic. I didn't think the pop culture references got in the way of anything too much but maybe thats because they peter out toward the end of the book? Idk, you should finish it and see what you think about the rest of the references. They weren't too distracting for me at all and I think she made these characters the right age without pandering.

alSO WHAT?! I HAD NO IDEA it was based on Anna Cramlin and Magnus Carlsen.

message 45: by Jenni (new)

Jenni ♡ i meannnn old books talked about stuff popular in the 2000s

message 46: by ???? (new) - rated it 3 stars

???? Maddisynne NOO I HAVENT GOTTEN THAT FAR

message 47: by Night Owl (new) - added it

Night Owl Reader I think that’s a problem. I’m not talking about the Pop Culture references. There are teenage characters in this book, so I don’t see the references as a problem. I do think that modeling your characters after real life people, and having them be together is really weird.

message 48: by daniela (new)

daniela wait what? nooo

Jillian Hatfield I HATE the constant pop culture references in romance books. u can tell thats how they’re trying to keep them relevant.

message 50: by juju (new) - rated it 4 stars

juju YOOOOOOO I KNEWWWWW ITTTTT. i felt it in my gut. it had so many magnus refrences, and i even made this whole theory about it to my friend at 2 am. i thought about anna as well, but holy cow i didn't want to go there, because that's honestly insane. like i had a very very strong vibe, but didn't want to go there, because well it's insane like whattttttttttttttt
