Breaking Dawn (The Twilight Saga, #4)

** spoiler alert **
A DIZZYING ride! I was thoroughly swept up. At the end, I couldn't even remember how the book began, (I started reading it the same day I finished "Eclipse").
In reading, I was quite concerned about the level of sexually intimate writing presented in this book. Though it wasn't necessarily written as "explicit," I started feeling like I was reading a seedy romance novel. I was embarrassed to think that my teenagers had read this book. I understand that in the marital relationship this is all normal and good, however, I would have hoped that Stephanie would have shown a little more restraint while considering that her major market is probably made up of teen girls who aren't married, and hopefully are still trying to maintain their virtue. Was her point to dangle the carrot? In effect, saying, "Girls, if you wait till you are married it can be great like this"? hmm. I wonder how conscious a decision it was on her part.
Of course, I have issue with the whole - let your boyfriend sneak into your room everynight through your bedroom window, and let him lie in your bed with you while you sleep, and be super quiet about it cause if your Dad woke up and found out, you would both be DEAD (super-human vampire hearing sure came in handy here) - that she has had in every other book in the series up to this point. ONLY in her supernatural fictional universe did Bella not end up pregnant before anyone considered a wedding. So, I guess responsibility isn't necessarily high up there in Stephanie's world. OR, is that her whole point - that Edward is so wonderful and virtuous and gentlemanly that Bella didn't have to worry about that with him. I hope her young readers don't try this as an experiment with their own Edwards - as I fear even the best of human Edwards wouldn't pass that test. The smart Edwards would never put themselves in that compromising of a situation to start with.
Okay, thanks everyone for letting me vent. With all that said, I loved the book, but was disappointed by all the sex talk, even if it IS a wonderful part of marriage.
I wish Edward and Bella all happiness in their future together as husband and wife! :)

Thank you for sharing what you did. I talked to my daughter several times about the book Twilight and whether it was appropriate. I even spoke to my kids after they read Breaking Dawn to ask if it had sex or whatever. They told me about that they had sex when they were married and how they didn't describe it, just that Bella got bruised and Edward felt so bad cause had hurt her. I felt like that was okay, but - you see even as these things are sidestepped (I don't know how far along they were in the book when this discussion took place)- the only way to know for sure if it is something appropriate is to read the whole thing yourself. As for me, while I was reading the whole series, I wasn't about to stop at the beginning of Breaking Dawn. I almost feel like Stephanie sold us out - like she knew sex sells, and now that they were married - she was gonna use it as a tool at her disposal. I thought the whole "we never have to stop having sex as vampires cause we never tire, don't even have to stop to go to the bathroom" was so unnecessary. grrr. And all that "wrecking 3 houses" business. come on. a little tact would have been nice. Couldn't they just have had romantic stuff - instead of turning it in to sex talk like you would have with your girlfriends??
