it was amazing

& I was left... STUNNED! Just, just, stunned. Incredibly, this one is the one to top when it comes to adventure & history and pace & ingenuity.

I've recently noticed how much history is revered (rightfully) by the modern authors. This is a different type of historical immersion. This is about bringing it to the forefront... something in the past is incredibly relevant, vital, to the present.

Everyone but me had read this, & after Da Vinci Code--that bitch of an overrated heathen--I thought Brown was a phony (in company of Nicholas Sparks, among others). Not so. This is a MASTERPIECE indeed.

I read this in like two sittings. All 710 pages of oversized print.

I was soooo hooked I recalled many other lesser books that have riveted me. This one is so incredibly put together, it is no wonder Brown has been heralded by the general readership, ingrained in the zeitgeist.

The awesomeness of this work lies in the battle between science and religion, perhaps one of the most seminal works about that topic. It explores this duality literally, symbolically... every which way. That they are married, both science and religion, is the thesis. Brown proves this with the precision of a skilled scientist. & with the heart of a devout... historian.

Fabian {Councillor} "Everyone but me had read this."
- and me, it seems. The only Brown novel I have read so far was Inferno, which I didn't even like at all. But I also own this one, so I guess I'm going to give it a try myself one day. Your five stars sound very encouraging.

Fabian Yeah, I was megasurprised by how intriguing this one is.

Felice Laverne Awesome review Fabian! @Councillor Inferno wasn't the best place to start--that one's sooo sub-par compared to his other works in this series. I think he was in churn mode by the time he got to that one, just cranking em out, so that one wasn't as special. :-)

Cassandra Angels and Demons is by far the best Dan Brown book.

Puck Great review Fabian, and I agree, The Da Vinci Code is way overhyped. Angels and Demons is a lot better; the mystery is stronger and the combination of the location with the art & religion has a lot more impact than it ever had in Code.

I'm looking forward to your review of Inferno!

Greg Fabian, Cassandra, Puck, I absolutely agree, "Angels and Demons" is my favorite of Brown's books. Oddly, I thought "Davinci Code" read like a treatment for a movie, and perhaps it was just that, a treatment intended as such.

Heard Inferno was a disappointment, though now that I think of it I do have it somewhere in my reading pile and it seems perfect for these long summer days.

Nikki "The Crazie Betty" V. This was by far my favorite Brown book. I've read The Lost Symbol too, and while it did have some interesting things in it, I felt it to be a huge let down overall.

For sure, Brown's magnum opus remains, and shall always be, this. f

Greg Fabian, I read this after reading several other Dan Brown books, and this one for me was the very best. It made "DaVinci Code" seem rather silly, made "Inferno" seem even more ridiculous.

Yup!

Ginger I felt the same with this book Fabian. It's my favorite Dan Brown book of them all. I was blown away with the plot, the detailed account of history, how science and religion have been battling way before my time and all the twists that this book had to offer. Loved it!

Peter Agreed on Deception Point. Do you think Brown isn't good with staying with the same character?

[Name Redacted] This is the only book by Dan Brown that I enjoyed -- as a scholar, it's the only one that doesn't make me roll my eyes so hard they go spinning out of my skull. XD

Greg Strom yeah, and the awesomeness of being an untrained paratrooper jumping out of a helicopter holding onto the corners of a windshield cover while a million kiloton anti matter bomb is exploding.

Tym I am rereading this out loud to my fiancé every night as we go to bed and it is one fun pulpy adventure. People seem to hate it because they are looking for facts in a piece of fiction when this contains a great deal of both

message 18: by Eric (new) - rated it 2 stars

Eric well, no, because iirc the author claims (how explicitly I do not recall) that those facts have been researched and are just being used in the novels- there’s a reason that author research failure has a subtrope named after this fellow

Eric (and yes, the Pope - a member of an influential Italian family - did initially support Galileo’s research; the _best_ that can be said for Brown’s historical recountings is that many are oversimplifications- not the work of a “devout historian, since Langdon and presumably the author don’t know what they’re talking about on these subjects.

Sarath I really wanted to read this book later this winter (IST) but your review made to start immediately now. Thanks Fabian :) ;)

Lisa van Dijk I felt the same way. I love this book. It is one of my absolute favorites! I think it is so inspirational.

Jason I enjoyed this one, read it before da vinci....the books are all downhill from here.

Dion Harper For Angels at war with the dark elements of humanity, I recommend A SECRET CAVALRY. Action & suspence with a lot of heart.
