it was amazing
bookshelves: fantasy, 2018-shelf, epic-fantasy
Read 2 times. Last read December 25, 2018 to December 26, 2018.

Re-read.

I devoured this book and the next four back in the late eighties and SERIOUSLY desired more... and yet, I never did get around to picking up all the subsequent books... until now.

Of course, I needed to re-read an old love and see if it stands up to the test of time, and you know what I found?

Fantastical fantasy goodness! I love it! And you know what's better? The author did a bang-up job of re-editing this "author-preferred" text. An extra 50k words, side plots, characters, and more rounding of the world. The old story was not touched, just enhanced. What can I say?

I like this novel better this time. :)

Great elements remain, and now through my YA-jaded eyes, what could have been a cringe-worthy love triangle was nothing of the sort. Becoming an apprentice, solidifying life-long friendships, going on an adventure full of pathos and seeming tragedy ends with lots of valor, gorgeous descriptions, and a vast, sweeping war.

Alien invaders in the literal sense, if not in an SF sense. Alternate world, rifts, magics, slavery, and SO MUCH VALOR! :)

I'm SO glad I'm revisiting this. I fully plan to read all the way through this next year. :) Yay! What a treat!

MangoLoverReads Sounds awesome. Thanks.

message 2: by Justine (new)

Justine I would really like to read this book in 2019!

Bradley Be forewarned, it is meant to be read in a grand wide sweep with all the others. :) Or at least with Magician: Master. :) I loved and felt the rightness of Silverthorn and Darkness at Sethanon as well, continuing that wide sweep. :)

I can only assume that all 31 books are as tight. :) I plan on finding out. :)

message 4: by Justine (new)

Justine Okay, I'll buy them all four together then ;)

I also have the rest of the Wheel of Time series to buy, to be able to read them with you next year!

Bradley It'll be VERY interesting to read both at the same time. I'm of the opinion that Feist's early stuff is easily the match for Jordan's. I can't wait to really put them all to the test. :)

message 6: by Kaylie (new)

Kaylie Briner Okay, can you explain to me what you mean by 30 books?
And is this the book you start with in this series? Because it says it was published last (of the 4) but I can’t tell if it’s just a different copy or if it’s like Star Wars and it’s a prequel.

Melissa Sullivan Thanks for posting about your reread. It reminded me that it was on my TBR (I read the first chapter and then put it down previously) and am now happily immersed in it now. :)

Bradley When they came out, I remember there were only four, starting with Magician, Apprentice, then Master, then Silverthorn, then Darkness at Sethanon. I got tied up and never got back to reading all the other books, which is a super shame.

As for the whole Riftwar Cycle, this is where it starts and then just continues on in whichever way it does.

To tell the truth, I have no idea if it goes back or forth. I assume that a few of these entries might be combined editions, too, but even so, there are a LOT of books. :)

All I do know for certain is that the first four follow each other chronologically. :) I remember that much. :)

Jordan Stephens Glad I loved this book on my reread 10 years later too! Hooray for dimensional travel in fantasy!

Bradley Yes! :)

Kevin WhaT!!! There is an authors preferred version??? And I just reread my old copy...

Bradley Yep! And he even cleaned it up some. :) Muahahahaha... I guess you'll want to re-read? :)

Kevin Doh! So nothing changed just more info?

Bradley More like he cleaned up, made it more readable.
