Dick Sand, A Captain at Fifteen

Never too young to stand.
1878. The Pilgrim is a whaler schooner, sailing the Pacific seas and returning from an unsuccessful hunting season. After picking up some passengers along the way, they calmly sail home until they spot a whale midway. This is the beginning of their misfortune, and a series of tragic incidents that costed the life of the captain and most of the ship’s crew. Dick Sand, young boy of fifteen and apprentice sailor, will rise up to the occasion and try to save the ship and its passengers from certain death.
A fantastic adventure (view spoiler) like only the one and only Jules Verne can deliver. In a way this felt like Verne’s version of Treasure Island, but with much more than just pirates. This was an epic tale seamanship, slavery, and the terrible effects it had on the continent, and its people. Dick Sand makes a fine character and I especially enjoyed Hercules and Dingo. (view spoiler)
It’s public domain. You can find it
*** Still remaining, the movie (1973).

★★★☆ Journey to the Center of the Earth [3.5]
★★★☆ The Fur Country [3.5]
★★★☆ The Lighthouse at the End of the World
★★★☆ Dick Sand, A Captain at Fifteen
★★★☆ Miguel Strogoff
★★☆☆ Will of an Eccentric [2.5]

Nunca demasiado joven para sobresalir.

Verne is almost always enjoyable. Thank you Berengaria :) !

Lol. Can you imagine having to remember every single rating system used by hundreds of your friends? I decided long ago to make it simpler for everyone and just adopt the universal GR rating system, which is: ★☆☆☆ did not like it ★★☆☆ it was ok ★★★☆ liked it ★★★★ really liked it ★★★★ it was amazing

😲 I'll commit this to my brain, for all your future reviews 😊 Thank you! I was so confused lol 😂

Thank you Irena! Yes I think this can be quite more enjoyable at a young age. Glad you enjoyed it too :D

Indeed lol. Thank you Heather :) !

Great review Fede ! I like your Verne reviews best.

Lol. The whale was just the trigger, and forgotten rather quickly. The story is so much more than that, but can't get into much detail without spoiling the whole thing :p. Thank you Karen!

Lol. My fifteen wasn't much different! Except that rather than listening music I was gaming my ass off xD. Thank you Inci!

Never wowed, but always decently entertained. Thank you PB :D !

A long train journey! That's quite an adventure too <3. Ideal for the occasion indeed! Thank you Alexandra :)

Not one of Verne's most famed stories, but a good one nonetheless. Thank you Rachel <3

This is the last one I found in my parent's bookshelves, so next time I'll have to pick one voluntarily, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, probably. Thank you Srivalli :) !

Thank you Thibault! Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, most likely; but that will have to wait until I return from my GR vacations, a few years from now.

Thank you Nora! The whale was the tiniest fragment of it really :p

Thank you Jan! Never too late, but glad you are at least familiar with some of his works :)

The last one I found in my parent's bookcase lol. Thank you Rosh!

I chuckled at the title ngl 🧍♀"
Thank you Carrot :'D

Enforced reading ruins so many things! I know. Thank you Elena :) !

Thank you Coco! There's a movie of 1973 but looks lame, I have it in tbw but doubt will ever watch it lol.

Thank you for the tip Anne! Yes I'm missing that one and Twenty Leagues under the Sea too! I guess I've been saving the best for last lol xD

He got his comeuppance and I'm happy for it lol. Thank you Esta :D !

Sounds like you owe him one lol. Never too late Imme! Verne deserves at least a chance ;). Thank you!

Ahoy! Thank you Kay :D
