This is the only large novel written by Агатангел Кримський, a famous Ukrainian orientalist, historian, linguist, writer and translator, polyglot, one of the organizers of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 1918. The English title of this novel is Andrey Lagovsky, - the protagonist, and even despite the author explicitly denying it is his preface, a fictionalized version of the author himself.

I’ve re-read it now because this year I plan to read more of Ukrainian classics, so I took (Ukr) and decided to go through the list as it is composed, i.e. chronologically. This is the #19 on the list.

This book is usually "advertised" as the first Ukrainian homoerotic novel. As for me, this definition is a bit of a stretch, because it is basically based on just a few sentences describing a young healthy male body (I don't know about others, but for me, it is aesthetically pleasing to look at young healthy proportioned bodies regardless of gender and without thoughts of "I’d fuck"). The hero himself is rather depicted as an asexual romantic. Moreover, this book is not so much about the hero's romantic experiences as about his development as a person, but starting not from adolescence, as usual, but from adulthood - at the beginning of the novel, the hero is already a university student.

The novel consists of four quite different but interconnected parts, united by the protagonist and a common plot.

The first part, "They Haven’t Understood Each Other," is about a young sophomore Andriy Lagovsky's meeting with his mother. It was first published in 1895. The idealistic maximalist student visits his mother and sees that he and his mother have nothing in common - she is obsequious to the ladies of the local bureaucracy to whom she sells dairy products, and oh, horror! she lends her meager savings at interest.
The second part of "Tuapse" shows a young professor of mathematics, Lagovsky, going with General Schmidt's family (a wife and two sons-students) to Tuapse (now Georgia, then the Russian Empire) for a summer vacation. He adores this family, even though they are ordinary, unremarkable people, as if the sun illuminates their moons and admires this light without noticing that it is only a reflection. Here he becomes to a large extent what he despised his own mother for, but does not notice. This part was published in 1905.
The third part, "According to St. Ephraim Sirin," describes Lagovsky's times of reclusiveness and introspection, and to some extent his post-traumatic state and recovery. It was published in 1919, along with the last part, " Got Along".

It is a very unusual work for Ukrainian literature of the early 20th century, starting from the protagonist and ending with the themes raised, social, religious, and worldview in general.

Ця книжка зазвичай «рекламується» як перший український гомо-еротичний роман. Як на мене таке визначення значно натягнуте, бо в принципі базується на кількох реченнях опису молодого здорового тіла (не знаю як у інших, а для мене естетично приємно дивитись на молоді здорові пропорційні тіла незалежно від статі і без думок «я б трахнув»). Сам герой швидше описується як асексуальний романтик. Більш того, ця книга не стільки про романтичні переживання героя, як про його розвиток як особистості, проте починаючи не з підліткового віку, як зазвичай, а з дорослого �� вже на початку роману герой закінчує університет.

Роман складається з чотирьох досить різних але пов’язани�� між собою частин, об’єднани�� головним героєм та спільним сюжетом, що розвивається лінійно.

Перша частина «Не порозуміються» �� про зустріч молодого студента Андрія Лаговського з матір’��, була опублікована вперше у 1895 р. Студент-ідеаліст-максималіст приїздить до матері і бачить, що нічого спільного у них з матір’�� нема �� вона лебезить перед дамами місцевого чиновництва, яким продає молочні продукти, і о, жах! Дає свої мізерні заощадження під відсоток.
Друга частина «Туапсе» �� вже молодий професор математики Лаговський їде з родиною (жінкою та двома синами-студентами) генерала Шмідта на літній відпочинок у Туапсе (зараз Грузія, тоді Російська імперія). Він обожнює цю родину хоч вони звичайні, нічим не особливі люди, він наче сонце освічує їх-місяці і любується цим світлом не помічаючи що це лише рефлексія. Тут він значною мірою стає тим за що зневажав власну мати, але не помічає цього. Ця частина була опублікована у 1905 році.
Третя частина «За святим Єфремом Сіріним» �� описує часи затворництва та самоаналізу Лаговського, якоюсь мірою пост-травматичний стан і одужання. Її разом з останньою частиною, «Порозумілися» опубліковано у 1919 році.

Дуже незвичний для української літератури початку 20 століття твір, починаючи від головного героя і закінчуючи піднятими темами, соціальними, релігійними і світосприйняття в цілому.
