In One For My Enemy, Olivie Blake takes the classic tale of star-crossed lovers for a witchy, modernized spin, regaling readers with the story of two magical Russian families silently warring in the midst of bustling New York City.
The feud between Baba Yaga and her 7 daughters, the Antonovas, and Koschei the Deathless and his 3 sons, the Fedorovs, doesn’t stretch back hundreds of years, but what it lacks in age and longevity, it makes up for in viciousness and brutality. Trapped between the wishes of the two family heads and the gargantuan shadow empires that magical authorities have not yet been able to dismantle, the Antonova and Fedorov progeny walk the perpetually paper-thin line of balancing private passions with public duties.
However, when the two households reach a conflict that ends not just in financial, but also physical loss, the children will have to decide whether they are content remaining just as faithful sons and daughters, or if they are finally ready to put themselves and their interests first.

First of all, let me talk about the writing, I found myself completely enthralled- THIS is the type of book that MAKES MY HEART SING!
Blake's writing is grandiose, but in THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY. This is a sweeping, lyrical retelling of Romeo and Juliet that is SOMEHOW both less and more tragic than it's Shakespearian roots. Her prose is a sort of songlike intensity that makes the novel feel magnified, romantic and edged at the same time; Not over flowery or pretentious- but detailed and and clever enough to blow you away.
This novel heart-wrenchingly portrays love and pain.
The book features romance and grief often in the same breath. The love of a partner against the devotion/loyalty of a child.
The world-building is often blurred, but this book marches to the beat of a different drum. Jaw-droppingly gorgeous, and the sheer depth of emotions evoked -omg. It's a must read and an immediate forever favorite for me.

There's definitely pain but in the most beautiful way. It's honestly one of my very top reads of the year. I heard so many mixed feelings on The Atlas series that I haven't picked it up yet and yesterday I was so skeptical about this one but- I'm on a major IDGAF DNF spree this year, so what's the worst that could happen? LMAO
Totally agree, her writing and storytelling is spectacular- hope you give it a try soon, total Autumnal vibes. Interested to see what you think â €

Love the fonts 😂"
I feel so called out for my font obsession
LMAO thanks girl Ë—Ë‹Ë â™ ËŽËŠË—

I feel like people either love or hate her writing. Either way she seems to evoke strong feelings. Personally I both love AND hate her writing?? You should give the Atlas Six a try! At first I hated it and thought the characters were INSUFFERABLE but then I really grew to like them and found so much depth in them. Now I can’t wait for the third book:) and her book Alone With You in the Ether is my favorite of hers that I’ve read so far 🖤🖤

I say Autumnal - as in there is a dark, grim, gloomy, sorrowful undertone in the story and that always give me personally an autumnal vibe.
I've always been that way with DNF books as well, just seems like extreme numbers this year. Probably because I've read far more books this year... LOVE that you are a DNF Queen too.. I, for the life of me can not stand trying to force myself to read something that's not enjoyable ... totally get it.
I just checked out The Atlas Six from Libby last night so it's up very soon!
I have Alone With You in the Ether on my Winter TBR lol - I saw a ton of great review last night and now I want to read it RTFN 😂
I can totally see that with her writing, I LOVE flowery, lyrical writing.. so of course now I'm going to read her entire catalog and fanfic ha -no chill.

Can’t wait to see what you think of The Atlas Six! Did you borrow the Audiobook or the Ebook? I listened to the audio book and I think it probably would have been more enjoyable as a Ebook/physical read. I hope you enjoy! When I was reading Alone With You in the Ether I actually had to take a break and restart it when I was in a better state because my mental health couldn’t handle how crazy the writing made me feel 😅 but I gave it 5 stars because it destroyed me in the best way and the writing was stunning as it is with her books.
I’ll be watching for your updates :)

Yes! Right! The vibes are perfect for this one.
I borrowed the audio, but I have the hardcover and the kindle. That way I can go back and forth when I have to work or walk my dog etc.
Apparently I was living under a rock for eternity lol I just recently started to be able to get into audiobooks more, before I couldn't retain anything - I think slowly I trained my brain lol. So that definitely added to the amount I've been able to read... makes me feel so accomplished, I feel like I put a dent in my TBR but then I look at it again and I've added double the books I managed to read lol - you know how it goes.

way worse things... we could be addicted to crack. LMAO Books are most def way better of an addiction haha ..
I work from home in an admin role so I rarely have to interact with anyone from my job so I can listen to my books and work all day long, then when I get off - read a physical book. I LOVE it and LOVE Libby and Hoopla for it. I really don't even know if it has helped or hurt my purchases. If I love a book, I buy the physical copy but then again .. .I'm reading a ton more lol .
I LOVE Julia Whelan... She narrates all of TJR's books (several others as well obv) with the exception of maybe Seven Husbands and Daisy Jones..? I've never physically read any of them and her books are some of my all time favorites- so I absolutely agree about the narrator adding to the story.

I hope you LOVE it!! It took me a little bit in the beginning to get a firm grasp on everything, the world building is quite blurry at times so if you feel the same way, please be patient with it- it's an amazing read! <3!

I could listen to her read my credit card statement lol! I read Beach Read and DNF it, listened to Happy Place and thought it was ok. I haven't particularly been fond of either EH or Ali Hazelwood. Don't ask why I lump them together lol
I'm going to DM you about Libby

girl, omg this book was it. I loved it sm and still think about it regularly. If you ever want to do a reread in the future lmk! I have a very small pile of books that go into this category bc of the writing being so beautiful. I used to write poetry often and when I read a book where the author is able to pull off such poetic and lyrical writing in the most stunning way it speaks to my soul â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸
Have you read The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, The Invisible Hour by Alice Hoffman or The Starless Sea by Morgenstern? OMG ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ They're so beautiful as well, I think you would love them if you haven't.

No i haven’t but i’m adding all of them to my tbr rn 🤠have u read divine rivals tho. The writing is very poetic and beautiful. It’s one of my all time favorite 🫶ðŸ»

tysm ml â¤ï¸â¤ï¸ not to be a bad influence lol but both target and amazon have buy 2 get one free sales on books rn 🙃😠it's really good, I'm sure you would love it! Worst case- library has digital copies 😊

ty Lila ml 🥰 â¤ï¸â¤ï¸ I can't wait to hear what you think of it, I just know you will love it. Both beautiful and tragic - perfection!

I went through the epilogue about 3 times bc same! I was like wait so what? lol. It would be nice to get a little novella or something.
I'm so excited! I just know you will love them! I did read Divine Rivals, it's one of my very favorite reads of the year. I love Rebecca Ross's prose as well, so lyrical and poetic - her Elements of Cadence series and Dreams Lie Beneath standalone are amazing as well! After I read DR I went through reading all her novels and was blown away!

I knew it- destined to be besties! It's the best finding ppl that have the same tastes in books , especially the ones that aren't as popular across social media. You'll love Dreams Lie Beneath, it's an amazing story and so descriptive, vivid and almost dreamlike - the FMC fights monsters in the towns peoples nightmares. I've got her Sisters of Sword and Song novel to read still, I've heard nothing but good things- not surprising though right? lol 🥰🥰

i aspire to one day be able to write like you!!!!
i will be adding to my tbr. thank you for sharing <3
