Narrator reads this like it’s a freaking middle grade novel.

Will try as regular book sometime.

Lyuba I’m so glad I’m not the only one! What’s up with the weird emphasis she puts at the end of words and sentences?

starryeyedjen Agreed...there were a few moments when she sounded similar to the narrator for Sydney from the Vampire Academy spinoff series audiobooks and all it did was make me want to relisten to those. :(

I don't know, but it is ANNOYING. I'm glad it wasn't just me, too!

Ugh, Sydney is the best. I miss her. But thank you both for commenting so I could see by your 3 stars that I probably wasn't missing much, haha.

Ի˫SԲڳٴǰ˫ I felt the same way!! Audiobook was not the way to go on this one. I'll maybe reread with my eyeballs before book 2 comes out.

Beatrice The narration was AWFUL. For a moment I thought it was an AI voice reading it—it was that bad. In print it was fine, but the audiobook was a DNF after two chapters.

Alice I'm really not liking the audiobook

Anne I like her actual voice - but I would be so frustrated if I were the author & this was the narration of my book! The way she broke sentences was like a 3rd grader forced to read out loud in class! Terrible.

Anna Yes!! I really like this book and felt it was so much fun, but the audio narration was painful! She completely ruined certain scenes due to her odd timing of how she read.

Nadine SHE’S SO ANNOYING!!! IT’S PAINFUL

Sue Exactly! The narrator is terrible. Weird phrasing of words and inflection in awkward places. Book is probably better if you read it yourself. Won’t be listening to any other books she narrates.

Wendy Darling Oh my gosh, I am both glad and horrified to find all these comments in reaction to my brief reaction to the audiobook. (What's up with notifications these days?!) Glad because I'm glad it's not just me being too picky, but a little horrified that this isn't a review and doesn't have anything to do with the actual book.

But thank you to everyone who confirmed they were annoyed by the narration, too--it can kill a perfectly good book so easily. I just don't understand why the performer (who yes, I agree, has a decent voice) chose to read the text the way she did.

And thank you also to those who say the actual book is a far better experience, the high ratings are very encouraging! It sounds so fun and I'll use this as the impetus to get a hard copy at some point.

Sara I'm having the same issue. I ended up here after Googling it's "Assistant to the Villain" narrated by AI? 🤦🏻‍♀ For me, it's the articles - "a" "an" "the"... Just no.

Okay, thanks to everyone for validating my concerns. I'll ditch this on audio and try follow up later in print. Onward and upward.

Wendy Darling Yikes, AI narrating audiobooks didn’t even occur to me. 😐 Now I’m starting to wonder about a couple of audiobooks I’ve listened to.

Such a shame about the choices made for this particular book, though. The right reader would’ve made this very entertaining.

Nan I borrowed the audiobook from Hoopla when it was first published and *hated* it so much that I could barely finish the first chapters. I loved it when I read it in print.

Katie T This is exactly why I gave up 9% in. Well the writing felt middle grade too, not just the narrator.

message 16: by Jade (new) - rated it 1 star

Jade Brallier I’m so glad I found this comment-I thought I was going crazy listening to this narrator

Melanie Eaton I’ve speed it up to 1.50 speed and the narration is still horrible. At 20% it’s a DNF for me. Maybe I’ll try the actual book.

message 18: by Brandie (new)

Brandie Williams Omg yes it was so awkwardly stilted and halted I was going crazy listening to her voice. It sounded like an automated answering service voice/computer!!! Worst narration ever (no offense to the narrator lol)

Danielle Overly Bookish I’m truly trying to slog through but the narrator is killing it for me.
