The Autumn of the Patriarch

The Great S.O.B.
The story of an unnamed aging general, all-powerful president and dictator of his small country, as he destroys the lives of everyone around him, willingly or inadvertently, in his ever continuous struggle dealing with the burden and excesses of his power and legendary leadership; and a dangerously unstable control over a precarious and impoverished Caribbean nation. But excessive power slowly burns and consumes those who wield it, and those who lose it.
This was one strangely tedious and still quite worthy memorable reading. Best dictator book I’ve ever read hands down, and the only one so far I should add. Equally boring and fascinating at times. The amount of descriptions, comparisons, similes and other figures of speech my primitive brain is unable to recognize is outrageously mind-boggling, and the most insufferable parts of the book, sometimes taking as far as half or full pages. The action and passages where stuff actually happens was engaging and sometimes incredibly captivating, and painfully realistic, for a third world country. If I had to point out a book that crudely depicts all the abuses of power, I’d have to say this one, even though fictional.
A story spanning decades in one single non-stop unique chapter, only breaking full stop every fifty pages or so. Some memorable events I wish I could forget include but is not limited to: Patricio Aragones the body double, the inner cabinet meeting, Manuela Sanchez, Rodrigo de Aguilar’s dinner party, the sanctity of Bendicion Alvarado, Leticia Nazareno and the little king, and Dzé Ignacio Saenz de la Barra, the wise.
This savage book is Marquez unmatchedly majestic in all his glorious crudeness, stream of consciousness style. First streamness I’ve actually not 1 starred methinks. I guess it only takes someone of the caliber of Marquez to make itenjoyable bearable enough. Recommendable, but only for the Marquez connoisseur, or the stream of consciousness fan, or possibly both, maybe exclusively.

Igualmente aburrida y fascinante a veces.

Well I think this is stream of consciousness so I'm mostly hating it, but it's Marquez raw and brutal as always so it's partly good. I'm only 1/3 but so far something between 2-3 stars methinks. We'll see :p

It's not for everyone I know. Thank you Inci ;) !

It's good, but certainly not one easy to read Lesle! Thank you :) !

Tough subject, but Marquez pulls it off. Thank you Esta :) !

Quite heavy and difficult to read indeed :/. Thank you Carrot !

I missed you too Shey <3! Funny I always saw myself as deep as a puddle lol. Thank you ;) !

You crack me up! This sounds quite worthwhile but not something I need to rush out and buy right this second.

Garcia Marquez truly makes everything great, even the unlikable lol. Thank you Srivalli :) !

Oh no Justin! It's good and possibly very worthwhile but definitely NOT the best one to start with Marquez at all :x

Absolutely! Thank you Thibault :)

I know! It happens to me too sometimes :'(. Whenever I want to recollect something but don't want to read the whole book again I just read a Wiki or a summary xD. It really helped me to write the reviews of previous books I read ages ago. Thank you Alexandra <3!

It's a toughie alright Daren! Stream of consciousness always is. But since you are familiar with many of GGM works I say you have one good step in already ;)

And I like how you have slyly (openly) scratched enjoyable! LOL!

An..."
I didn't even realize I did that lol. Thank you PB! I may do someday, but dunno. Most days I'm too lazy even to write a review, and the only reason I do it is just so I don't forget the whole thing xD

Read several, the order list is there on the review, but I'll post it again

I do hear One Hundred Years of Solitude is the best of Marquez and quite similar to The House of the Spirits by Allende, but sadly haven't read any of those yet to assert on the validity of such a claim.

Oh I have that one to read too, next year probably. Hope you enjoy it Nora :). Thank you!

Gracias Pedro! Ugh!

Marquez often is lol. Thank you Kay :) !

Absolutely! As it progresses a book can bring out many mixed feelings. Thank you so much Tina <3!

Válgame dios, comparar a Isabel con Gabo...
