Miss Marple's 1st book!

description

But beyond that, this is really just a fabulous example of Agatha Christie at her best.
This was my first time reading (actually listening) The Murder at the Vicarage and I was blown away by how enjoyable it was. Especially considering I've read a ton of her books and pretty much knew what to expect out of her mysteries.

description

I knew I didn't know who did it, but I swear I thought I knew who didn't do it!
I was (as always) dead wrong.

So the gist is that the town Vicar gets caught up in a murder mystery that happens in his home while he's out visiting a sick parishioner.
Whodunnit?
Well, if the police can't figure it out, just leave it to the nosey little old lady who lives around the corner...

description

Joan Hickson narrated the audiobook I listened to, and she was fabulous.

Highly recommended!

Kimber Silver Exciting review, Anne! I have yet to try out any of these books, but they are on my list! 😊

Anne What?! She's my go-to for fluffy/fun mysteries.

message 3: by Buddy (new)

Buddy Scalera I've never tried an Agatha Christie novel. I may give this one a try based on your review.

Anne Whaaaat? I didn't know there was anyone over 30 who hadn't read at least one.

Val ⚓️ Shameless Handmaiden ⚓️ Ever since I saw Witches as a fraidy-cat 9-year old and had to leave the theater as I was scarred for life, I am scared of creepy old women lol

Anne Ha! I intend to be a creepy old woman...

Val ⚓️ Shameless Handmaiden ⚓️ Me too. I shall be afraid of myself lol

Anne Hahaha! You and me both.

message 9: by Amy (new)

Amy You’re seriously tempting me to catch up with Miss Marple!

Anne I'm digging in, girl! I'm on a mission to find as many of these as I can get my claws on.

message 11: by Amy (new)

Amy That’s so fun! I love it when I get on a reading mission like that. Happy reading, friend.

Oh, shut up! You're aiming toward becoming The Dirty Old Man. Or...wait. Have you officially reached that goal? ;)

Thank you! I'm plugging along.

I've never read any either. But given how much you enjoy them, maybe I should.

Anne What?! What's up with you and Buddy?!
Now, having said that, you need to remember that these are fluff murder mysteries and not exactly thrillers.

Define "officially".

I'm guessing I'd be better off starting off with Hercule Poirot?

message 19: by Eric (new) - rated it 4 stars

Eric Mesa what series do the gifs come from? Anyone know if did the books justice?

message 20: by Kon (new) - added it

Kon R. I read my first Christie December 2020 at the ripe age of 33. This one does sound fun.

Good grief! I started reading these when I was in my late teens early 20s! Even so, I've not (at the ripe age of 45) managed to get through all of Christie's books.
This one was fun, though! I hope you get a kick out of it, Kon.

Pamela I have never read any of the books in this series, but have read several in the Poirot series and am just not feeling it so I'm giving up. IYO is the Marple series more of the same, or different enough that I should try it?

message 23: by Anne (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anne No, if you don't like Poirot, then you just aren't into Chrisite's writing. Don't force yourself through any more of these, Pamela.

megs_bookrack Great review, Anne! I love your passion for Christie's work. I've decided 2023 will be my year for reading the Miss Marple series in it's entirety. I can thank Santa Claus for helping me with that because I received 12, I think, of the latest William Morrow editions for Christmas. I've read a couple here and there, but not all and not in order. I am excited to start this one in January!!

Glynn Currently reading this. I have never read anything by Agatha Christie. This is so much more than a " murder mystery." Fantastic! 🙂

Glynn I recently finished the book and it's fantastic. It's the 1st Miss Marple novel but Miss Marple first appears in Agatha Christie's "Thirteen Stories."

Warren Johnson I grew up with Agatha Christie. I am 78 so I guess my mother gave me the love of reading. I received a set of paper back Miss Marple books which I know I will enjoy reading

message 28: by Rea (new)

Rea K So. Like. I *own* plenty of Agatha Christies. But, like, I have never been able to get into them. I'm going to see if my library has them as audiobooks.

message 29: by Anne (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anne Audiobooks are the way to go with these if you're having a hard time. I do think Poirot is easier than Marple, though.

message 30: by Rea (new)

Rea K I think I've tried a couple of ones you've read. Murder on the Orient Express or Death on the Nile maybe. Murder mysteries aren't generally my cup of tea anymore. Tho I would *like* to expand my reading. (And good news. I live in a big city that has *many* Agatha Christie audiobooks. Should have become a city girl much sooner.)

Susan Jones That’s her name! Whilst reading I couldn’t remember who played Miss Marple that I liked
