really liked it
bookshelves: legal-thriller, suspense-thriller, must-continue-thriller-series

It kept me on my toes until the end.

I liked that Flynn, the protagonist, is not just a lawyer but has a controversial past and let's say... A bit shady. There is a certain dichotomy in his actions and he can be defined as morally gray.

My only criticism is that the plot is a bit unoriginal and that we once again have a lawyer with disagreements with his family because of his job and his vices (alcohol). Someday I would like to read about a lawyer without addictions, with a united family despite the difficulties that arise in the life of a criminal lawyer. I think this is why I liked Her Deadly Game by Robert Dugoni so much.

---------------

So... The title on the book cover is different from the title in GR. That made me wonder and search the right spelling, found out that 'defence' and 'defense' are the same word spelled differently. 'Defence' is the correct spelling if you're writing in British English, whereas 'defense' is the correct spelling if you're writing in American English.
Good to know.

Connie Happy reading, Mica! And don't worry, I've run into the same issue before. I never realized how many words are spelled differently between the UK and the US.

Harris Walker UK or US English? Interesting conundrum in such a small world. Flatiron Books is a New York-based publisher, which is an imprint of the UK Macmillan Publishing Group that is owned by the Geman-based Holtzbrinck Publishing Group. Steve Cavanagh is Irish but has won or been nominated for a lot of UK awards.

I'm not a publisher, but at the end of the day, I guess a book's principle marketplace would probably determine what English is used.

Sounds like an entertaining read whether British or American English!

Shelley's Book Nook Terrific review, Mica. 🤗💕

In Canada it is defence. I know this from hockey. 😂

Can't even explain the confusion I have sometimes. Thanks Kindle has dictionaries. 😅

It was a very good read, Harris! Thanks for all the information, I guess with this cover they were aiming at the US audience.

Thank you very much, Shelley! 🤗💕

😂 In Spanish it is "defensa", so when I read "defence" it didn't seem natural to me.

Sabrina I get your complaint about the plot being unoriginal as that can sometimes deter you from enjoying the book more but I’m glad you mostly enjoyed this. Amazing review mica 🩷

Rowan MacDonald Excellent review, Mica! Always good when a book keeps us on our toes 😊

C. (Comment, never msg). This is also Canadian English, with all the "U's" in colour, honour, flavour where they belong! :) I agree with what you wrote. Mica, your skill is so gorgerous and surprising, I can't believe English is your second or third language. Originality is key to good stories, films, music, art....! Also, unoriginal expression, haha: "less is more"!

Have a lawyer with a mystery or problem to solve. No stress external to the plot. Pushing hard to make sure there is drama is why hardly anyone thinks of creating mysteries without crimes in them. I just want a treasure quest, map, and clues to decode, baby!

Federico DN A lawyer without addictions and a wonderful family! I'm not much into utopian fiction, but if that's what you want, then may your wish be granted lol. Cool review Mica! Hope you also enjoy the sequels :D

Thank you so much, Carolyn! 🤗💜 At school they taught me to write with "U's" but over the years, the vast majority of books I read do not use them.

Oh come on, Fede! Why do you think I read fiction? Biographies are not my style. Let me fantasize in peace, please. 😂
