really liked it
bookshelves: sapphic, queer-historical, lgbtqia, 2024-reads

"I live in a body that has loved her and I see with eyes that have witnessed her. She is part of my muscles, my tissue, she is unforgettable."

this honestly read more like a horror than a coming-of-age romance, which is to say: it was very successful. everything is so impossibly mundane, yet so complete an exploration of youth; howarth's writing is encapsulating. the love weaved into each page is so intense it's almost akin to grief. i hated each character and found myself fond of them, either way. lucy and susannah were complicated and selfish, and i'm so happy there is this queer love story that is real in all its beautiful and morbid ways.

“I knew she would be beautiful today, of course I knew, but this is unbelievable. Never in all my years of Christianity has there been talk of an angel like this. My God, she is not even walking, she floats around the room.”
Chloe Michelle Howarth, Sunburn

s.penkevich Oh this is such a perfect summation of the book! impossibly mundane, yet so complete an exploration of youth, for real! Like just normal life but under a microscope to all the terror and desire and horrors, yea, I love your description of it being practically a horror story. So glad you enjoyed this one! Great review.

thank you so much !! ohh for real about this being “life under a microscope i think the amount of detail in howarth’s writing made the readers so aware of every little thing down to the dirt under lucy’s nails! i need to get my own copy of this book so i can highlight it from cover to cover.

rashmi (catching up) glad you liked this one <3

Oh true! I love how observational she is while also often not being able to connect the dots herself. It’s such like…does that count as dramatic irony? I can’t believe this is a debut. The whole thing just hums in harmony with itself.

Here beside Liv also begging. Groveling even. It’s so good!

liv ❁ great review mags <3 there really is an underlying horror in this book that very much feels necessary in a lesbian (or really most queer) coming of age that takes place in a homophobic town. howarth wrote such flawed, real characters it’s amazing
