I want to believe.

I really do. Just following the news these days is enough to make one lose faith in humanity. I really want to believe that there is something out there, god, gods, whatever. Aliens. ANYTHING. I want to feel like there are other creatures out there in this vast universe of ours, with greater knowledge, greater intelligence, and maybe one day they'll grace us with their presence and bestow on us their superior intellect.

I certainly hope those future aliens are more intelligent than the dumb-as-dirt creatures in Obsidian.

Seriously, how stupid can you get? I've never been on the run, I've never had to hide, but if there's some things I've gleaned, it's how NOT to stick out like a sore freaking thumb.

First, you find a HUGE goddamn city, like San Francisco, where nobody will even blink if you step out into the street in rainbow-colored pantyhose and an accompanying beard. You do not find a backwoods town where it's likely you're considered outsiders if your grandparents were born the next town over.

Secondly, you BLEND IN. 2 pairs of triplets move into town within days of each other? That is not blending in. Supernatural beauty? Not blending in. Names like Daemon? NO. NOT BLENDING IN.

Thirdly, you FIT IN. You make friends, you're friendly to people. You do not act like everyone is your enemy and warn off the friendly girl next door just because she wants to know where the closest store is.

I just don't understand how this book got so many positive reviews. I get that this is fantasy/sci-fi YA fiction, but there's gotta be a limit to willing suspension of disbelief. For me, there's very little to like about this book. The heroine is all right, but I kind of rolled my eyes at the "I'm a BOOK BLOGGER. I'M SO HIPSTER. I'M A ZOOEY DESCHANEL GEEK GIRL" bit. That's how she seemed to me. She's a fair bit more intelligent than some of the YA fiction heroines I've read, but considering there exists Luce/Bella/etc...that's not saying much. The spaghetti scene was kick-ass, though.

I found Daemon to be an enormous asshat for most of the novel. He's hot, sure, but that's it. He's such an unbelievable jerk, and I found Dee to be like the patient wife of an abusive husband, sniveling and simpering and constantly making excuses for her brother's rude, boorish, borderline abusive behavior.

And Ms. Armentrout, enough with the 100000x random alien references/foreshadowing in the book already. It's called subtlety.

They just made a deal to make this into a movie ;_;

Mitch Oh you gotta read the sequel. Every time I see the other reviews I feel like I'm living in a bizarro world.

Damn straight. I do set myself up for bad books, but I draw the line sometimes.

Nasty Lady MJ I love your review. I am admittedly a fan (or getting to be a former fan) of this series. I like it because it's sort of fluffy, but God it really is a Twilight ripoff.

Jessica I was going to mark this as a did-not-finish, but I ran out of books to read, and my addiction to read anything made me read it. :/ It's ok, I guess, wish that whats-her-name-main-character-yeah-right-shes-a-book-blogger is less, I don't know, one of us? A fellow book reader who gets her own hot guy, mystery? It just seems fake to me.... Plus, this is totally a Twilight copy.

Yeah, I know it's kind of stupid, but I kind of rolled my eyes at the book blogger bit. It just seems to be a little bit of a trying-too-hard cry for appeal, you know?

Nasty Lady MJ The book blogger thing seems to be a trend that a lot of authors are doing right now. Like I started this self pub book right now where the MC's friend is a vlogger, I don't know if it's book specific but still made me raise my cliche eyebrows. I think it's sort of akin to the MC that reads classic literature but has the IQ of a dodo bird. Anyway, when I first read Obsidian I liked it enough, but now I roll my eyes when I read about the books Katy is mentioning especially since some of them....well, are on some of my lists.

Khanh, first of her name, mother of bunnies Elle, you've posted the same exact message on 12 of my other reviews, so I'm not going to do you the courtesy of anything but the same copy and paste reply to each of them.

Do read some of my 4 and 5 star reviews sometimes. Then you can think I'm a hater if you want. I don't write books because I'm better at analyzing and seeing details than I am at breaking things down. Just because I don't write doesn't mean I'm unfit to criticize. Just because I'm not a musician doesn't mean I can't criticize music.

Get a fucking life, seriously.

Mummy Cat Claire Reading this now and I find the writing to be horrible. I agree with your review so far. I was just wondering your opinion on the writing because you didn't mention it.

Angel (huge fan of all things Totoro) When I first read this, I freaking loved it. But then again, I was a bit younger, my tastes were different, and now when I try to reread it... I can't. It does seem too...fake? I don't. Or "trying too hard", I guess. Still, enjoyed the sense of humor.

And btw, I love your reviews, Khanh. Hell, some of the books I love, you gave bad reviews and I STILL love those because they're hilarious and make me see a different side of things. Keep up the awesome reviews. Your opinion is your own.

Sizzy Funny review

jenn *mother of a dragon* Twilight all over again....

message 13: by Mia (new) - rated it 5 stars

Mia Linh I thought they moved into the city because of the rock or the mountain that kind of protected the from the Arum? And their supernatural beauty wasn't their fault either because they chose their looks when they arrived on earth and didn't know how all the human stuff worked, also Daemon is the only one who can change easily...Dee or the others have problems with shapeshifting. Daemon was an asshole to Kat but that was because he didn't want her to get too close and find out what they really are especially since she lived right next to them. Imagine one day she decided to come to their house and seeing Dee walking with the speed of light or Daemon moving things with his mind. Daemon being a dick to Kat was suppose to prevent her from wanting to even go near the house. If it wasn't for Dee desprately needing a friend Kat would've never find out about them. I personally enjoyed this book and normaly find your reviews quite truthfull but this was a slip.

Ronyell Awesome review!

Francina Simone Just started reading (on chapter 3) and I see your point. I got super weirded out by the Dee/Daemon relationship. Like...I can totally see her as his emotionally abused wife instead.

Marley In several instances I've been confident that I'll enjoy reading your review more than the book I'm considering. Thank you once again for saving my time ;)

Callie Great review!

message 19: by Dean (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dean Winchester I felt like the will they won't they was way too much. "His lips grazed mine repeatedly throughout the whole book but we never kissed." But I liked the book for some reason. I must be going through puberty still at age 24.

message 20: by Dove (new) - rated it 1 star

Dove Yes, your description of Dee is exactly how I feel. She just continues to make excuses for Daemon's behaviour throughout the novel.

Rayne Did anyone read Roswell high or see the tv series Roswell?
