Cliff Watt Hhhhmmm. I'm not sure how I feel about this book. It's brilliantly written and at the same time utterly appalling to read.

Nabokov manipulates the reader from beginning to end, but the reader probably knows that; goes along with it for the indulgence of the art. In many ways, I felt Nabokov's manipulation of me as was a parallel to Humber's approach to manipulating Lolita.

But of course Lolita wasn't able to walk away was she. A point many readers miss. She was a prisoner at the hands of a truly sick individual.

Anyone who claims that Humber's deserves our sympathy has fallen for the same self delusion as the protagonist does, he believes his own justifications almost to the end, sees a monster in Quilty that he projects his own crimes onto in an attempt to rid himself of the guilt. But of course his guilt catches up with him in the end; doesn't it?

This is the best book I've ever wished I'd never read. But don't attempt to pass judgement on it unless you're prepared to read it for yourself.
