I finished 3 books this week because of Pasig Day (July 2, 2009) but I only spent half a day reading this book. It was not only an easy read but an entertaining one. I liked Mark Haddon's storytelling style - the story was told in a first person perspective and what made it amusing is that the narrator is an autistic child. I particularly held my breath in the scene where the pet rat went down the train platform and Christopher (the autistic child) had to chase it while the train was approaching. It was really an outrageous scene because Christopher did not want to be touched and for him to avoid being run over by the train he had to be pulled up from the platform.
The only thing that I did not like about this story was that it was not all original. For example, the storytelling style was too similar with Antoine De Saint-Exupery's The Little Prince including the illustrations and drawings (remember the elephant inside the hat?). The simple first person narration just reminded me of the other great novel that I just finished - J. D. Salinger's The Cather in the Rye. However, taking everything into consideration, I still like this book.

Sharon I've yet to read this one. I keep putting it off. I really don't know why. Maybe it's because my son played with with a boy for a few years whose mum told me to read this book so I would better understand her son who took to my son. Yep he would only play with my son, to some degree anyway. Then we moved away to another country so I don't know how he is doing now.

Maybe I'll read that book real soon !

K.D. Absolutely I hope you do, Sharon. This is a nice little book that is full of surprises. Just switch to your "light-read" mood and just don't be too serious :)

Very true - even the chapter numbering.

I hadn't thought of comparing it with The Little Prince, but it's so long ago that I last read that, that I'll just take your word for it.

K.D. Absolutely Thanks, Cecily.
