it was amazing
bookshelves: a-team-group-reads

I embarked on this book with trepidation, knowing it was violent beyond compare, but it's the only McCarthy I haven't read yet, outside of the Border Trilogy, which I have no interest in. I was reading with a very small group, otherwise I would have dnf'd it. The violence and barbarity were over the top in my opinion, it was difficult to read because of that, there was a horrifying massacre in every chapter, sometimes 2 or 3, and I found it difficult to believe that this was on the list of 100 best books ever written. Some of the most terrifying characters were based on real people and real history regarding incidents on the US/Mexican border in 1850, especially the Judge, an almost superhuman personification of evil and mystery.

And yet.......

The last chapter turned it all around for me, not making sense of what I had read before, but calling into question my perceptions of the action. It left me with a sense of foreboding about McCarthy's vision of our world and our future. I truly don't know how this author does what he does, but it is brilliant in that he makes beauty out of awfulness, makes you question what you think you know, and leaves you haunted by questions.

It's good this was my last McCarthy, because I can't read any more of them. I'm done.

switterbug (Betsey) You grokked him, Diane!!!! He does leave me haunted with questions.

Angela M Excellent review, Diane. Don’t think I’m up for the violence in spite of how the end turned it around for you.

message 3: by Laysee (new)

Laysee I'm glad this was a group read for you, Diane, and that the ending turned your opinion around. Wow! Great review.

message 4: by Ned (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ned He’s one of the few who I cared to read everything produced. I suggest you try the border trilogy, the last is one of my favs.

message 5: by Sue (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sue K H Wonderful review, Diane. The violence was hard to take for sure, but I agree that the ending made it worth it. Why aren't you interested in the border trilogy? Did you hear bad things? I loved All the Pretty Horses. It's nothing like this in terms of violence. I hope to get to the other two.

Diane Barnes Thanks Switterbug. Haunted is a perfect word.

Diane Barnes I don't think it's right for you either Angela.

Diane Barnes I'm as amazed as anyone, Laysee. I was all set to not rate it at all.

Diane Barnes Ned and Sue: I read All the Pretty Horses probably 30 years ago and was just not that impressed. It was the first time I had read him. It's possible I could change my mind on the Border Trilogy, but I'll need years to recover from this one.

Wyndy Eloquent review, Diane. I wasn’t expecting to see five stars from you on this one ;-)

message 11: by Dave (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dave Marsland Well done for sticking with it, Diane. It's his best book (IMO) despite the horrendous violence. Great review!

Cathrine ☯️ 5 + your thoughts = a very McCarthy-esque review.

Pedro All the violence (and characters) in this one left me completely cold - couldn’t have cared less.

I also thought the writing came across as pretentious and I’ve seen slugs dragging themselves along quicker than “the plot.

It’s funny that people (men?) tend to classify it as McCarthy’s best work when for me this was actually his worst! 😂

Diane Barnes Wyndy, neither was I.

Diane Barnes Thanks Dave. It was not an enjoyable book by any stretch. I think my favorite of his was Suttree.

Diane Barnes Is that supposed to be a compliment Cathrine? Or a criticism? Could go either way.

Diane Barnes I agree Pedro. After a while, reading about the violence was just numbing. I made the comment in our group that this was a "man's book." Women are a civilizing influence for the most part.

Lori Keeton Kudos for sticking with it, Diane! I am impressed with that and glad to know that when and if I get to this one someday, Diane said to persist to the end for the reward! Thanks!

Pedro The woman in me didn’t like this book at all, Diane. 😝

Cathrine ☯️ Diane wrote: "Is that supposed to be a compliment Cathrine? Or a criticism? Could go either way."

😂 You're right about that.
I don't know of many authors, maybe none, who can take a reader to the woodshed who then swear off ever reading him again, and still get those 5 stars. All due respect, but like you, I'm done with him.

Diane Barnes I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, Cathrine. Til the end, I was ready to 2 star it, even I can't believe I gave it 5, but I didn't even have to think about. All in all, it's a relief to declare myself free of McCarthy. I may have to resort to Harlequin romances just to cleanse my mind. 😂

message 22: by Candi (new)

Candi I don't know if I'll ever read this one. The endless violence isn't something I think I want to subject myself to. At least not in the near-ish future. I enjoyed reading your review of it though, Diane!

Diane Barnes Probably wise Candi. Or else have 2 or 3 bottles of bourbon cream at the ready while reading.

Lorna A wonderful review, Diane. It is said that this was McCarthy’s best. I struggled with the violence throughout, but as you say, it ended up making sense.

message 27: by Antoinette (new)

Antoinette Awesome review, Diane! Based on all the violence, I know I couldn’t read it. The benefit of a group is that it does make you get to the end! Amazed how the ending turned it into a 5 star read!

It did Lorna, but it was a struggle to get there.

Without my group, I would have given up. My 5 stars still amazes me!

Bourbon cream does dull the pain when needed, Diane :D

message 31: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Diane, you are brave. McCarthy haunts me in a bad way. I am still recovering from reading him in my 20's and never returned.

Diane Barnes It's true that he has a very bleak outlook of humanity and our future. He sees nothing but bad and all his books carry the same message. He is a genius with words and mesmerizes with his writing. I'm glad this one is under my belt and I never have to entertain the thought of reading it again.

message 33: by Angela (new)

Angela Leivesley Diane please give The Border Trilogy a go. I always mention it as one of my favourite books!

message 34: by Angela (new)

Angela Leivesley Excellent review of Blood Meridian by the way.

Diane Barnes Never say never Angela. I may tackle it at some point, but I need to distance myself from McCarthy for a while.

message 36: by Jeannie (new)

Jeannie Great review, Diane. McCarthy is on my list to read more of this year. I will wait on this one. Do you have a favorite of his?

Diane Barnes My favorite one was Suttree, written early in his career.

message 38: by Mark (new) - added it

Mark Porton Oh Diane, what an enticing review.....first you say how violent it is, then you say the last chapter turned it around!!!!! Grrrrr.....added!

Diane Barnes Just remember I didn't/sort of did recommend it. Maybe your review will clear some things up for me.
