Master side tracker.

Billy Budd is possibly the best sailor ever, skilled, respectful, athletic, good natured and charismatic; always happy to do his job, and help others with theirs. But his handsome qualities and warmhearted personality frequently shadows his peers, and arises the jealousy and resentment of others; one in particular. Sometimes you can see your enemy coming, but sometimes, your innocence may blind you.

This was one sad story, but overall worthy. Somewhat predictable too; I went in blind and got the feeling where it was going right from the start, and I wasn’t wrong, which I generally am. Must also note Melville is the ultimate expert in divagation and off track narration, taking the trouble to write many extra chapters to ramble about the most inconsequential things; and frequently incurring in tediously long convoluted descriptions like “Billy Budd is, against any ill thoughts anyone may have of him, for is the nature of people to sometimes judge without any well founded reasons, unquestionably and unequivocally, and without a single trace of a doubt, if such thing may even exist, an excellent sailor, when he could’ve just simply said “Billy Budd is a good sailor. Which is of course 99% less flowery, but, 200% less annoying. Ultimately I enjoyed the general idea of the book, yet no so much the way it was written. To my experience, so far, Melville has never been an easy read, not in English nor Spanish.

Can’t say I loved this, but I don’t regret reading it. For a used book, and a short one, it was worth it. Can’t really recommend it to anyone though, except maybe to a Melville or classics fan.

Still remaining, the movie (1962)

PERSONAL NOTE :
[1924] [166p] [Classics] [Conditional Recommendable]
-----------------------------------------------

★★★☆ Moby-Dick or, The Whale. [3.5]
★★★☆ Billy Budd, Sailor.
★★☆☆ The Lightning-Rod Man.

-----------------------------------------------

Short reads are my jam lately but must admit there are better ones out there. Also this should be a freebie since it's free domain, but couldn't find it in Project Gutenberg. Weird.

Vanitha Narayan Great review, Federico! I am a Mobydick fan so I will pick this up. Loved this "Which is of course 99% less flowery, but, 200% less annoying" :). LOL! We really missed your reviews!

message 11: by Amina (new)

Amina Definitely do agree that Melville's writing is one that doesn't quite click with everyone, but is certainly a master of navigation detail. Glad that you were able to appreciate his work, even in short dosages, like in a short story. 😊 Terrific review, Frederico!

Hola Axl!

Thank you Vanitha! I'm back for a week or two to finish a few things and then getting back to my slumber. Hope you enjoy it! Should be free domain but sadly couldn't find it in Gutenberg; could be in other sites though ;)

Thank you Amina! A navigation god indeed Melville, as far as I'm concerned. Never seems to write about anything else lol.

Paul Ataua Great review, Frederico. Billy Budd is one I haven't got around to yet. Maybe I will now.

Berengaria I liked this one, too, even though I'm not a big fan of old lit. Nice review!

Federico DN Srivalli wrote: "Lol, a classic for a reason! Nothing will be in simple English. Glad it had some moments. Superb review, Federico. :)"

Ugh! This classicness sucks xD. When I write something I'll make it simple, for the good of humanity lol. Thank you Srivalli!

Heather Adores Books Enjoyed your review! I’m not one for classics, so don’t worry about watching for my thoughts.

message 29: by Joe (new)

Joe Krakovsky Maybe all that extra rambling was to throw you off guard and surprise you when you aren't expecting it. I liked the way you explained the divagation.

Federico DN Joe wrote: "Maybe all that extra rambling was to throw you off guard and surprise you when you aren't expecting it. I liked the way you explained the divagation."

All that extra rambling felt like Melville trying to throw me overboard rather than off guard xD. I guess they call them classics for a reason lol. Thank you Joe!

Federico DN Tina wrote: "It's always good day when you don't regret reading a book! Great review Fedo 👍"

As long I don't regret it I count it as a win :D. Thank you Tina <3

Thank you Elena! Classics can be a sort of acquired taste, sometimes not worth acquiring -ehem- xD

Not an easy read at all, although there are many worse, faaaar worse lol. Thank you Thibault!

Alexandra It's very nice to see you here again, Federico!

I've never really enjoyed Melville's writing (so far, at least). You thought it was worth your time, anyway ;) Great review!

Mimi This review is, in my humble opinion, which of course isn't even close to equally worthy as those who came before me and will, undoubtedly, come after me, but which I must express nonetheless, as to speak my truth is and has always been not a want, but a need, exceptional.
Tl;dr: Great review, Federico ;)

Daren "Melville is the ultimate expert in divagation and off track narration, taking the trouble to write many extra chapters to ramble about the most inconsequential things; and frequently incurring in tediously long convoluted descriptions" 100% Federico. If you can work through that, Melville is good. If not, to hard.

That's Melville alright lol. Bartleby is next, so crossing my fingers xD

message 46: by Ron (new)

Ron The sentence you included from the book - I couldn't figure out what Melville was saying! I've heard that about his writing. Meandering makes a book longer, maybe not more interesting though, which is why Moby Dick scares me. You provided a fun review here, Federico!

Federico DN Daren wrote: "I found his short stories far more focussed. I have only read a couple, including Bartleby..."

Oh cool! Looking forward to them then :D

message 50: by Barbara (new)

Barbara I give 3 stars for just the same reasons, Federico. I am going to try to fit in more classics this year. There have to be reasons they remain classics. I enjoyed your take one this one.
