What a lovely little jewel of a book. Someone called it bonkers, and that’s a very good description, you totally can’t work out what is going to happen next. The world-building is amazing but it’s the characters that really stand out, and so many. I clean forgot what happened to Erstwhile, so I had to go back and look it up, it’s that kind of book , very fast moving and things change all the time. It all made sense and the end brought a tear to these elderly eyes. Maybe there is something to be said for YA, a good story is a good story and doesn’t need to be difficult and sad. I wish I was young again, I’d have loved this as a child. Turns out there’s enough child left in me to adore this book.

Middle Grade is aimed at preteen kids, I suppose. Seems to have n romance unlike YA books, and younger protagonists not 17-year-old teen girls pining over undead love interests.
I haven’t read Rory Thorne although I’ve had it on my to-read for a while. Someday
I am actually quite surprised Hardinge gets labeled a middle grade writer. Her books are complex enough for adults, actually more complex than many, and so what if they feature young protagonists? Gives me an extra perk of avoiding the otherwise unavoidable romance that seems to creep in everywhere (I’m not a big fan, usually).
