Pure Classicness.

A collection by legendary Edgar Allan Poe. What is there to say? You can’t get any more classic than this; which is good, and bad, depending on how you want to look at it. Must say Poe is consistently good, yet rarely awesome, at least in my experience. I hate poetry, hence my rating for the poems; if you are fond of the genre you might enjoy them though.

Diane Wallace This is when you have a hard time putting your thoughts in writing! :)

Meh. He's good, except when he is not.

Oh no collections for me are the easiest to review! Mainly just sorting out stars; but I've been on Hiatus lately so.. maybe in a few days :p

message 5: by Robin (new)

Robin I’ve only read the Fall of the House of Usher by Poe and that was a 3.5 star read for me as well, I should definitely give some of the others a go at some point! Great review Federico :))

Thank you Robin! That's one of Poe's best ones for sure. I can't rec them all, but I'm positive you could enjoy a few others as well :)

Carrot :3 (on a hiatus) I could never put myself through a book full of poetry. Glad you found it good enough to get through it :D

Federico DN Carrot :3 wrote: "I could never put myself through a book full of poetry. Glad you found it good enough to get through it :D"

With practice it becomes very very easy to skim poetry lol. Thank you Carrot!

message 9: by Amina (new)

Amina 'Quote the raven - nevermore'' - 'here, here, lies the beating of the tell-tale heart', - 'I and my Annabel Lee'. Yes, I do admit to be a fan of his work, for all through middle school and high school, EAP was a recurring inclusion in our English class' literature books - definitely a fan favorite for anthologies, and leaving a lasting impression on me. 'House of Usher' and 'Tell-tale heart' are gems, and even 'amontillado', while more abstract - does eventually grow on you. But, definitely approve of how you described his works, Federico. Happy that there were some that you enjoyed, and some - not so much. 😊

inciminci 😍 Love Poe!
Nice ranking, Fede, but I quite like The Raven, so I would disagree on that one alone 😊

Thank you so much Amina! You can always find one of Poe's stories in every anthology out there xD. So naturally after reading so many of his short stories here and there, I decided to read all his bibliography and just tick the whole thing and be done with it lol.

Federico DN inciminci wrote: "😍 Love Poe! Nice ranking, Fede, but I quite like The Raven, so I would disagree on that one alone 😊"

Thank you Inci! I know, and despite my complete disgust for poetry you can still tell The Raven is one of the best ;)

Morphing_kashi I prefer his stories to his poems (apart from the raven, which is iconic). But he has so many stories it's hard to remember which is which apart from a few more well known ones.

Federico DN Morphing_kashi wrote: "I prefer his stories to his poems (apart from the raven, which is iconic). But he has so many stories it's hard to remember which is which apart from a few more well known ones."

Totally, stories rule over poems every time! I'm slowly reading his full bibliography and indeed after a while it gets increasingly hard to remember and tell them apart :x

A Mac I like that way of describing Poe - "consistently good but rarely awesome." I feel ya about that poetry.

message 18: by Srivalli (new)

Srivalli Rekha A born poet rating poems so less! Naturally, he has high standards for poetic works. ;P Nice review, Federico.

Federico DN A wrote: "I like that way of describing Poe - "consistently good but rarely awesome." I feel ya about that poetry."

Thank you Mac! Poe is good, except when he poets lol.

Thank you Srivalli! Ugh poetry! That word should be banned xD

message 21: by Ms. Smartarse (new)

Ms. Smartarse Oh so it DOES get better? I've been fighting my way through his works since November and kept pondering if it was worth it. To be fair, I've yet to read any of his more famous work, so maybe that's why.

Oh you too? I'm slowly reading his full bibliography of short stories and let me tell you Smartarse there's a lot of undecipherable trash that isn't worth anybody's time. Near half of this works I have filed as Meh. His lesser know works are unknown for very good reason, but as long as you stick with the "popular" stuff you should be good I think, or as good as you can be with a classic :p

len ❀ great review, federico! i’m also not a fan of poetry so i don’t read it. here and there i might read a story told in verse but that’s it.

Thank you Elena! I hear The Raven is a story in verse, which may be true but the format still sounded like poetry to me xD.

They usually are, the good ones at least :p. Thank you Alexandra!

message 40: by Ron (new)

Ron Hopefully you received a couple of scares here Federico. Rare when a collection is great throughout, but Poe could be one of those writers who's name remains consistent to readers over the years. Don't think I've read The Black Cat, and based on your rating I should.

Federico DN Ron wrote: "Hopefully you received a couple of scares here Federico. Rare when a collection is great throughout, but Poe could be one of those writers who's name remains consistent to readers over the years. D..."

The Black Cat is one of the good ones Ron, although can't rec everything of Poe. I'm slowly reading all his bibliography and let me tell you many of his lesser known stories are quite unreadable.

message 42: by Nora (new) - added it

Nora Currie Sorry that this collection was just okay, Federico. I received a lovely version of this collection for my birthday so I will probably still check it out as The Raven and Murder in the Rue Morgue and The Fall of the House of Usher are my favorites by this author.
