it was amazing

Holy shit (literally). This book is riveting. It is a fictional novel based on the life of a guy named Jesus who is one badass motherfucker. The book chronicles some of his totally rad and awesome adventures, such as turning water into wine and coming out of a cave after he died! Any lover of fictional adventure books such as harry potter will love this book. It does have some slower parts, but it picks right back up every couple of chapters (the chapters are creatively named after people!). Also, I learned a lot from this book. It had some good messages, such as how killing and being gay are wrong! Happy reading!

Crytle Creki it's called the facts of life!

Denae Christine Listen. Some people think the Bible is the opposite of science. It's not. The Bible is God's message to His creation. Everything it does say about science is correct, but it's focus is the meaning of humanity and message of salvation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
It's all true.
Where do our moral values come from? Our conscience? From God. That's really neat Hannah. Miracles do happen, because God created the universe and its scientific rules. He can go around them. He made time!
Every archaeological dig has also proven the Bible correct time and time again. There is way more evidence for the Bible than macro-evolution.
How else could over forty authors over a period of at least two thousand years write so much (back when little was recorded) and have it all fit together? God inspired His word. He showed it first to the Israelites, and it has spread to the world. It's a gift.

Loren oh that the world would open up their eyes and see that this book is the Third best thing that God has given us. The First best thing was His only Son, Jesus Christ, the second best thing was sending His Holy Spirit, and the word of God wraps it all up as the third best thing. The Lord works in mysterious ways, and wonderful and great are His works! My soul does magnify the Lord and my heart rejoices in God my Savior! He has opened the eyes of the blind, healed the sick, cast out demons, and took care of all my sins on the cross. It should have been me on that cross and not Jesus, but He showed His love for us all by making the ultimate sacrifice. Yes, the poor will be filled and the wicked will see their end, and all mankind will bow down and say Jesus Christ is Lord! All praise to God the Father Almighty and to His only Son, the true King of Kings and Lord of Lords, Jesus Christ, and to the comforter, the Holy Spirit of our Lord. Amen.

Thank you, someone who agrees with me on the fact that the bible is fiction, not real.
It's meant to be non-fcition, but nonfiction means that verything in it is real.

Denae Christine So many people believe that it IS nonfiction. So many people believe that it IS real.
I know I can't convince you, and I ought to try, but I do get tired of it when people denounce the Bible because they dont like it, or just don't believe it because someone else said it was fake.
There isn't any hard evidence AGAINST the Bible and its teaching. Some people just don't think there's enough that PROVE it.
The Old Testament. Long, and often hard to get through. The New Testament. Full of outrageous stories about some guy named Jesus whom other historians of the first century hardly mention. Why would we have this book today if people didn't believe it to be the divine inspired Word of God? Why would some of these CHRISTIANS believe if it wasn't all true?
The disciples, hunted and tortured for their faith. Some of the authors of the Bible were the least likely to become prominent people (Peter, loudmouthed. Mark, coward. Matthew, tax collector. Paul, murderer of Christians.) We believe in the Bible because it is the the thing in this world that makes the most sense, that best explains the origin of the universe and life, and because we're overjoyed that God chose to redeem us through His son, and we may as well read the Word He's given us.

1. No one is ever going to convince another person to take up a religion via posts on the Internet, so give it up.
2. Get a sense of humour! It might help your evangelising.

message 16: by Jim (new)

Jim I always thought the old Testament was much more interesting than the new, once you skipped all the 'begats', anyway. I never did see how anyone could reconcile the two, though. Completely different plot line.

In the first, we have this jealous god who is pretty fast & furious with the smiting & pyrotechnics. Poor old Moses knocks twice & wanders 40 years without getting to see the holy land, Lot's wife glances back & becomes barren. King David takes it to a whole new level when he decimates 10 of his 12 tribes because he thinks he might, for no real or good reason, have ticked his god off.

Then there is part two with Jesus, which seems to be a new marketing campaign. Now we're supposed to get a message of love from a series of the most horrible death scenes ever as various key players are killed off & occasionally betray each other.

Depending on the version/translation you read (Catholics have a whole extra book that no one else seems to want, not to mention a couple they don't want either.) there's a lot of good stories in the extras, too. Crazies have been using Revalations to show how the end was near for years, although they read vaguer than a horoscope to me.

It is a good book to get familiar with. Lots of good stories in it & some do have a historical basis. Since not even top theologians can decide whether the Bible should be read as 'strictly true' or not, a casual reader like myself can't have to weighty of an opinion, but I think it is worth the time to at least skim.

Thom Dunn My own kvetch with Jesus has to do with those Gadarene swine....Jesus sent the devils into them and they plunged over a cliff. We never find out if Jesus indemnified the farmer, but judging from his lackadaisical attitude toward property in general, I suspects NOT. Are we supposed to think that cause it's pigs it's ok to send them crashing to their death ? HERE WE GO AGAIN....Just cause you Middle-Eastern types don't like pork....well, there is my Jewish son-in-law who has no trouble chowing down on a ham sandwich, but that's another story ....

Thom Dunn The New T. says killing is wrong, or Jesus does, perhaps....but have you checked out the Book of Joshua ? It is a bloodthirsty celebration of genocide, that or I missed the point. You'd think if God gave you a homeland he'd see to the slaughter of the Ur-people in it, but NOOOOOooo !

Angela Koch For the most part I liked this review. I got a good laugh out of it. I also (mostly) agree with it. Except, I agree with Levina. Being gay is who a person is, who I am. If you disagree, then do so in your head, please. We do not enjoy being told who we are is wrong.

message 25: by Engineous (new)

Engineous Denae wrote: "Where do our moral values come from? Our conscience? From God."

I agree with this. Killing children, paying for rape so that you don't get in trouble, and randomly deciding that we should conquer other nations to bond as a family is the essence of good moral values. I am also impressed by the brilliant idea of forcing people to prove their holiness by killing them, and then waiting to see if they come back.

I'm not an atheist, but that was really annoying, dude. If the Creator is a capitalist, and if the Bible is true, consider me in league with the anti-side. But not Satan, they're an asshole too.

Andrew Funniest thing I read all day

James Question... what if you are wrong about the Bible.. Wouldn't you hate to die and wake up in Hell because you made light of a warning message? You better check your facts and find out the truth.

The biggest facts that you cannot overlook that prove the bible is true..
1. Historical Evidence- historians continually use the bible as historically accurate. Many lost cities and nations were found how... because archiologists would read the bible and go looking... then bingo.

2. Scientific evidence- did you know many modern science began because people used bible knowlegde- for instance, the father of Genetics, Gregor Mendel used the bible to found the knowledge of Genetics. Oh and yes, dinosaurs are in the bible too (Read Job 38-40)

3. Prophecy- one of the biggest proves, only God can tell the future- read Isaiah chapter 53 and tell me who it is talking about. (it was written 500 years before).

4. Textual accurace- the bible has over 5,000 manuscripts of the Old Testement and 10,000 of the New Testament- showing the accuracy of the books. No other book in history has the textual evidences like the bible.

These are just a few. Read it for yourself. You don't want to be wrong.

Start reading in Romans and John. You'll learn first that you are a sinner, have broken God's laws and deserve hell, like the rest of us. God does not allow liars and theives into heaven. Then You will learn about God's love after that...

message 28: by Abi (last edited Aug 07, 2010 10:05AM) (new)

Abi "Everything it does say about science is correct"

What about that time when it said that God made human beings, in the form they are in now, and that all humans are descended from those two (which, by the way, ew - does the bible tell us whether it was parent-child incest or brother-sister incest or both that got things to the 3rd generation?), but then we found out that that was wrong and that actually all life on earth is evolved through natural selection from single-celled organisms? And that the period during which planet earth existed, but humans did not, was actually a bit longer than 5 days or whatever the bible says it was?

Wake the fuck up. Does it not strike you as kind of weird that everything the Bible says about the world completely ties in with human knowledge around the time that it was written. But wait, now we know loads of stuff that doesn't fit in with what the Bible says, or is just completely beyond the imaginations of people living 2000 years ago and strangely does not appear in the Bible. Like, there was a massive flood, but it didn't cover the whole world, only part of it. And, mad coincidence, that was the part of the world where the authors of the Bible lived! And they didn't know about continents like the Americas or Australasia! It doesn't take a genius to work out what happened. I think if the bible was divinely inspired, god might have told those guys some more interesting stuff about how things work, like things they didn't already know, and also might not have told them things that weren't true, like that all life was created just as it is today. But he doesn't seem to have been bothered.

Nobody with a modicum of critical-thinking ability is a Christian. They may be of a philosophical bent and go in for deism, because the existence of some sort of supernatural force, just like the existence of Russel's teapot, is something you can't know about for sure, but they aren't Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Wiccans, whatever.

By the way, people complaining about the last sentence's comment on gay people: I think it was part of the joke. Of course no civilised person believes that being gay is a 'sin' or makes you a bad person.

message 29: by Abi (last edited Aug 08, 2010 03:28AM) (new)

Abi I'm not trying to convince anyone, just explaining why I find the idea of anyone believing in Christianity to be frustratingly absurd. Anyone who has taken the trouble to think critically about the Bible takes everything in it with a massive pinch of salt, and understands that it is an entirely manmade document which may be of historical interest, but can teach you nothing about the origins of the world or humanity, or anything supernatural. It's interesting in the same way that Greek myths are interesting - fun stories, insight into how an ancient culture explained their world. People who choose instead to treat these myths as reality, because they have faith, are immune to logic, because faith is a rejection of logic - a decision to believe without evidence and against the grain of rational thinking. I have no hope that those people will change their minds. To make it less general, I will clarify: those people may have the ability to think critically, and may apply it to other aspects of their lives, but they refuse or are unable to apply it to their religion.

Bridget Gautrau God will forgive you for this, but you will still go to hell.
How was the Earth created then? If not by God, I mean? You don't mean to tell me that it was like a bunch of parts were put into a box, the box was shaken, and out popped the Earth, so perfectly by science? Who created science then?
You may not believe now, and you may never believe, and I pity you for that.

Hey Saved By Grace I recommend you read a book called "Conversations with God" it's very good. I guess I think that you will believe it and take it seriously cause you have some faith. Anyways, see if you like it, I thought it was amazing.

Why am I recommending it to you? Becuase I think it's relevant to your comment and mentions some things that you talk about. :) :D :P ^.^ ^_^ :D

The Bible was written as the history of God's interaction with humanity. There are many history books not as well written as Deuteronomy. I find Betsy's review a little ham-fisted.

Vivianne Crocker I am not going to try and convince everyone here of the truth. I will tell you this: The Bible is truth. However, in order to understand the Bible in a better way, read The Catechism of the Catholic Church . It helped me in my faith, and I hope it will also help anyone who reads this. By the way, Betsy, I find it a little wrong to review the Bible with a few swearwords.

Mauricio Salvador GV It is interesting to note that even Vatican Scholars that study science and/or the Bible(yes, actual priests who devote their life to study science and the Bible exist and their opinions are highly regarded)consider the Bible a work of fiction not to be taken in a literal sense, specially the old testament. They agree Jesus existed and see the Gospels as no more as an allegorical way of presenting his life.
And another fact: no one knows who wrote the gospels because none of them was written during Jesus live. They wera all written at least 60 years after his death. And the current Biblical Cannon was not the original. It was actually made by the Popes and other hight priests Catholics and other brances during the Council of Trent in the 16th century.
So in a way it is a work of fiction, and is the common opinion inside the Biggest Religion that it should never be taken literally. BUT the messages it contains are actualy pretty outsanding. I'm not catholic nor christian. BUT beleive in Jesus as being a great being that came to teach us. And his message is the important one. Not his life, that is secondary.
Now that is a FACT.

Mauricio Salvador GV Oh and one more thing. If Israel is the promised land WHY THE HELL DID HE GAVE THEM A PIECE OF DESERT!?
At least he could make Hawaii the promised land, a better place indeed.

Sketchbook Shucks. It's a quik read if you skip the porn.

Corey Elkins Whether you love or hate the bible, all of you have joined goodreads probably because you love books. There are little children on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ too, and they read comments like things. (I know because my 9 year old little sister reads them, and has told me how mean people can be.) Just grow up, all of you. Stop being immature and poisoning the minds of others.

Lauh - Random Utopias ... poisoning the minds of others? Like, I was't even going to answer but then I saw your answer Corey Elkins. The comments were made for something called giving our opinion about the books. I have come across dozens os "bad" comments about books I love and I didn't get poisoned. MAYBE, this website or at least parts of it are not completly proper for 9 year old since they are not completly able to see the diference between what is their opinion and the others/because they don't know how to deffend themselves so well/because they don't always understand so many comments. But that is also the reason why 9 year old are still considered too young to be walking around the internet without any kind of supervision. No one is here to tell your sister "do not believe in Jesus/God/Bible" but since she actually felt bad for the comment someone should explain her that some people don't believe in God/Jesus/Bible and that hardly ALL the people believe in something. We don't have to consider what kind of comments we make about X ou Y, people have to decide to read them or not and to get prepared to hate or love the review. Your sister is still too young to understand this this discussion as any other 9 year old and if you feel like explaining her why fine, if you don't fine, anyway. Just don't come here telling that people are mean and that we should stop giving some kind of opinion just because some people are more sensitive.

btw, i wasn't sure if you were talking as someone religious and if your sister is as well or if you were talking in general. I made the references to Jesus/God/Bible because we are talking here, but this actually applies to basically everyhting. Just to finish, I didn't mean to be offensive in any way.

I'm not quite sure you understood what i meant.

Anyone can believe as they like- when i said "poisoning the minds of others", i didn't mean poisoning them against God, religion, or the bible itself. My sister, at 9, understands that some people don't believe as we do. Don't get what i said twisted- I said not to poison the minds of others, but i meant regarding LANGUAGE. Throwing down the F bomb, calling people female dogs, etc- its just stupid. Swearing is for 13 year olds who can't form a respectable response or review. I simply implied that such people should grow up and stop spending time throwing out swear words just because they think its cool. Its not cool- not on goodreads.

Especially since this is a place where people should come to show their admiration for books. I meant to clean up the content of their language, not whether or not they believe in God or have a specific religious view.

Perhaps, before you judge someone totally on a comment that didn't go into perfect detail, you should message them with a question about their comment before you assume they are judging someones opinion or personal views. If you had done so, you would see i am one of the LEAST likely people here to begin a religious debate regarding how "wrong" other people may be or how everyone should be like me. I'm not that kind of person in any way, shape or form.
