Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln's Killer

This book is spectacular. It reads like a police procedural and a murder mystery thriller. OMG. It takes the boring recitation of the dusty old facts of the story memorized in high school and brings them to life -- and offers many, many, many more details than I recall from history class.
For example:
I never knew that Secretary of State William Henry Seward and his son were almost killed that night with along with Lincoln.
Lewis Powell, a former Confederate soldier, and a John Wilkes Booth co-conspirator, attempted to assassinate Secretary of State Seward IN SEWARD'S HOME while Seward was recovering from a carriage accident in Washington, DC.Â
Powell gained entry to Seward's home by claiming to have medicine for the secretary. Powell then bolted into the house, stabbed Seward in the face and throat (not fatally, but ouch!) and wounded Seward's son more seriously.Â
Seward and his son recovered, and Seward continued to serve under President Andrew Johnson for another four years.
Read this book.
5 big, giant, gold stars!
