it was amazing

I found myself smiling frequently while reading this.

Willy Wonka meets The Matrix in the near future online game age. I almost typed video age and that would date me back in the 1980s, but that would be OK too. Like James Halliday, I was a teenager in the late eighties and so Ready Player One by Ernest Cline has a special place for me. I played Dungeons and Dragons (I was even dungeon master for a Tomb of Horrors campaign) I played coin operated video games, I obviously dig science fiction and comics, I listened to Rush, REM and Van Halen, etc. etc.

And for my ŷ friends who enjoy my trivia questions, I went all out for my Ready Player One chapter; after all, 80s trivia was a big part of the book and so what better tribute could I pay than to level up with a treasure load of trivia questions? Cline invites us, especially those of us who were teenagers in the 80s, to geek out and it is a fun experience.

Like Among Others, Jo Walton’s Hugo award winning novel, part of the charm of this book is the fun nostalgia, but Cline takes it to another level as the 80s trivia is an integral part of the plot; a near hopeless post cyber-punk (gamer punk?) dystopia with excellent characterization and with a very likeable cast.

More than this even, Cline makes an intelligent, humanistic observation about where our world is now and where it is heading with the loneliness and isolation that comes when the cyber-world is more interesting, and more vital, than the real world. Yet Cline also makes a statement about the resiliency, tenacity and perseverance of the human sprit by demonstrating that even if the only connection two people can make is on a purely artificial and mental level, as in two people who only know each other as online avatars that genuine fellowship can still occur, that even love can bloom.

One of the greatest compliments that can be paid to a book is to say you could not put it down, that’s how it was with Ready Player One, a very, very good read.

I am stingy with my ŷ 5 star votes, this one had my vote about a third of the way in.

** 2018 - I'm weird about books and films. If I have read the book first, I almost never see the film. I have not seen the Steven Spielberg film and likely won't. Nothing against it, I very much enjoy Spielberg's work and think it is great that this book was made into a movie but ... it's just me. As good a story as this is, the charm and great attraction was the 80s trivia and how Cline so expertly blended a trip down memory lane with a cool SF concept.

Scott Rhee As a child of the '80s, I also enjoyed this one...

Lyn I know! I am far from sentimental but I found myself smiling and laughing frequently, even tuned into the 80s station on Pandora

Apatt I enjoyed it a lot too, though in retrospect it seems a little juvenile. I rated it 5 stars also!

message 4: by Forrest (new)

Forrest I loved DMing Tomb of Horrors. Hated being a player in it, though. :)

message 5: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Ha, you have a good memory, don't recall ever being a player in that campaign

Tomb of Horrors is etched upon my nightmares . . .

Aj the Ravenous Reader Awesome review, Lyn and that concluding image- Lol! I've heard a lot of great things about this book. I'll put it in my list.^^

message 8: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Pure 80s AJ, and thanks

I remembered that one as well. it had the wall where one of the holes was instant death by disintegration. Oh the horror for my warrior/magic-user RIP.

Lyn That's awesome John

Forrest One of the best twists I've ever heard on Tomb of Horrors was a DM friend of mine who started the party out waking up at the end of the adventure, naked and with their genders switched. They had to make it back out alive . . .

message 12: by John (new) - rated it 3 stars

John Devlin That's just mean.(lol)

I almost never give split reviews or ratings for book but that book had me marinating in my teenage years - I think I might've got a pimple while going through it.

message 13: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Ha!

message 14: by Derek (last edited Mar 06, 2016 03:02PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Derek LOL.

I think I might be getting a pimple just thinking about the book...

But it's interesting how different people react to a book. I love your comparison to Among Others, Lyn, but I think I took it exactly the opposite way. I loved Cline's references to so much of my teenage years, but it's Walton who "takes it to another level" because hers is about books!

message 15: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Thanks Derek, I'll eventually reread this one I'm sure. Among Others likely not

message 16: by Lynx (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lynx This has been on my to-read list forever! You make it sound so fun! Definitely gonna bump it up.

message 17: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn You'll like it, I sure did

message 18: by Tony (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tony I loved this one so much that I ran out and bought a copy of his next one Armada, as soon as it came out, but was greatly disappointed.

Also, I have been meaning to ask you this... I see that this review is 2 1/2 years old, and I see your old reviews on an almost daily basis. I know that they are old, because often your reviews prompted me to buy the books and read them, so I remember having read them before.

The Question is..... Do you post them, or does ŷ?

message 19: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Thanks Tony, I was a little disappointed with Armada as well.

It's me, I repost. I like to be on GR and just posting when I finished reading a book was not enough, so I started reposting older reviews. My criteria is that it must be at least 3 months old; usually even longer. I will maybe tweak my review or update the picture.

It's fun because I can reconnect with friends (like Tony!) or share a review with new friends, or just revisit the book without rereading.

message 20: by Tony (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tony Thanks! Just wondering. I often get invited to play Candy Crush or to visit a business by a friend on Facebook, and when I asked them to stop sending me these notices, they had no idea what I was talking about. Seems Facebook puts these up automatically. I was wondering if ŷ did the same. Now I know.....

message 21: by Erik (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erik Quite pleased with your review, in that you mention the book's underlying themes of humanity, something that seems to many reviewers fail to note in their '80s trivia' haze.

message 22: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Thanks Erik, it was easy to get lost in the trivia fun

Cliff Jr. Reading this one now. Just noticed a typo in your review. sprit -> spirit

Wayne Barrett Nice review. It sounds like I have about a decade on you but I still have some great youth memories from the 80's, especially playing Dungeons and Dragons. I loved that game because it made us use the greatest computer of all; our minds.

message 25: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn ;)

Celeste Great review, and perfect image choice to end with!

message 27: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn "In your eyes!"

Thanks

Kausik Lakkaraju Though I was born in late 90's , I loved it. Particularly, the references to 80's and 70's pop music, movies and many classic games like Pac man and donkey kong. I would have enjoyed it more if i was born in 80's

message 29: by Ryan (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ryan Goodness. It looks like I've inadvertently plagiarised your opening sentence! Nice review.

message 30: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Easy to do, this does make me smile, and thanks

message 32: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rita Hi! My brother is a HUGE fan of this book and given that his birthday is coming up I wanted to know if you have any idea of a book similar to this one that he might enjoy and that I could gift him?
Btw that was an amazing review. I think I'm going to give this book a try

Lyn howdy

message 44: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Lyn, This was an awesome review. This book is another one that has been on/off my list. But now it's going on for good if you gave it 5 stars. I know how you are ;-) I'm just kidding though about your ratings because we had a conversation (it's been awhile) about people thinnking 3 stars was a bad rating when it isn't necessarily. Do you remember that one ? Love your honesty in reviews

message 45: by Jeff (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jeff Van Valer Loved this book. Genius idea on the part of he author, who obviously knows his 1980s. Perfect time to write it and attract children of yesteryear! I’m partial to the band RUSH and am delighted to see they got a little attention in Ready Player One. Great review, Lyn!

message 46: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Thanks Jeff, Rush is still a favorite

Chris Gager Going to the movie?

message 48: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lyn Maybe ... probably not. I usually don't see films after I've read the book, but this one I may

message 49: by James (new)

James Thane Great review, Lyn. This sounds like a lot of fun.

message 50: by Lyn (new) - rated it 5 stars
