bruh.
this book took me 20 days to read, and to be honest it felt like a whole lot longer.
this book - in my opinion - is very obviously a debut novel. it reads like the author has A LOT to say and wanted to put it all in a single book without killing any of his darlings or including any of the (potentially boring) stuff you need to have character development or a compelling plot. the characters went on constant tangents chock-full of pretentious language that people - even very smart people - do not use in (enjoyable) conversation with each other. the irrelevancy of said tangents to the characters conversations made me think that the author wanted to pepper the book with his thoughts without integrating them organically or saving some for a follow-up novel (or twitter).
also - and this is just my personal preference - i don’t care for purple prose. for some reason i keep reading books written by poets and getting annoyed by constant similes that make no sense. kind of like how i read tons of short story collections then complain about how i hate short stories. i am the problem. but also similes are.
but also the cover? gorgeous. and don’t even get me STARTED on the spine. and also titles that end in exclamation points.
