really liked it
bookshelves: weird-fiction

A strange, uneven book of fiction, but one that is oddly compelling. It is somewhat like magic realism, but more primeval and mythic than the dark fairy tales of Marquez. It is a little like Kafka too, but much more energetic, teeming with life.

If Egon Schiele wrote fiction, it might be something like this.

Jayaprakash Satyamurthy I love this book! I have another volume of his short stories, 'Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass' that I am saving up for a rainy day.

Some of his stories remind me of the work of the Urdu writer Naiyer Masud.

Bill Kerwin I'm not familiar with Masud. I'll keep him in mind. Any favorite titles?

Marc Richardson i agree with the Egon Schiele thing...he would write like this

Kay I read this for a writing class last summer. We each had to write a short piece in his style. The exercise got me in touch with him and just how difficult his unique style is. He was killed by the Nazis at the beginning of the war and it the beginning of what may have been a stunning writing career.

A few years ago I was inspired to use him as a model, and I was not pleased with the results. I couldn't capture that combination of the bizarre and the real.

Yes, I knew how he died. Another good reason to hate Nazis! As if there were a need for more reasons!
